Diaper Inculcation

Julia O'Shea was born Julia Blair and was raised in Connecticut. Her father was a very successful businessman in New York City and her mother was a journalist. Her upbringing was under the daily supervision of a nanny by the name of Emily. Emily was a great caretaker and cared for Julia in the best way possible, yet Julia grew up resenting her parents for rarely being home. Her summers were be spent at an affluent summer camp. It was named Camp Flora. It was located in Oregon and catered to rich girls. Despite being 3,000 miles from home, these were her happiest times as she found a passion for the outdoors and the communal living with friends. She had no siblings, but the girls at the camp became her sisters. Most of the girls would return year after year, so they became very close and would keep in touch when returning home each year.

When Julia graduated high school, she went to a prestigious college in the Northeast majoring in education. There she met the love of her life, Jack O'Shea. He was like no one else that she ever met; a complete opposite of the people she knew in her childhood. Jack was from Texas and although he was from a rich family like her, he was nothing like the other rich boys. He was outgoing, honest, hard-working at his study, and genuinely brilliant. His confidence, intelligence, and his slight Southern accent caught Julia's fancy.

At the end of Julia's third year and after dating him for two years, she faced the reality of separation. Jack was graduating from school and landed a job in Dallas. They committed to keep the relationship going, but during Julia's senior year, the two split.

Three years later, Julia received a call out of the blue from Jack. He was in town on business and wanted to have coffee. One thing led to another, and Julia found herself in love again. This time, she could not bear to be apart and decided to leave her graduate studies and move to Dallas. Their relationship progressed quickly and the two decided to elope. Julia's parents were outraged, but in some strange way, that made her all the happier. She now had the excuse she needed to cut them out of her life and start fresh with the man she loved.

Jack was already a very successful businessman at an education software company; he won awards for his sales accomplishments. During Jack and Julia's time in college, the two spent copious time hiking, camping and sightseeing, but their time in Dallas together was limited to weekends because of Jack's business travel. As more time passed, Jack's career seemed to take more importance than the time with her. She spent most of her time in study at school focusing on early childhood education and psychology, but longed for more time with Jack.

After two years in Dallas, a surprise came. Julia was pregnant. Although she had aspired to be a mother, she was in no rush at age 24. She also was beginning to question her relationship with Jack. He was noticeably absent and showing less and less affection. The news of the baby was not met with enthusiasm. When Sophia was born, Jack did change, some for the better, some for the worse. He definitely had a paternal sense, but his childbearing methods were strangely familiar to Julia. Without discussing with Julia, he hired an evening nanny to help with nighttime duties. He booked weekend getaways with Julia with baby Sophia being left to the care of her nanny. Although Julia abhorred leaving her baby, for the good of her marriage, she complied with his wishes.

By the time of Sophia's third birthday, the O'Sheas had a full time nanny caring for Sophia. Julia was spending her time shopping, passing time at the country club, and socializing with friends at night. She had also cut her long wavy blonde hair very short, but stylish and wore subtle makeup. Jack was always traveling and rarely at home, so Julia found comfort in the company of other wives of the business elite. She was miserable, yet seemingly helpless in doing anything to change her situation. Jack, on the other hand, found pleasure in his business success.

Meanwhile, Sophia spent most of the day with her loving nanny Lucy. Lucy was college educated, majoring in childhood education. She was lured by the offer from Julia to work as their nanny for a generous salary and an offer to repay her substantial college loans. In many ways, she was overqualified for the position, yet in some ways under-qualified. She never worked as a full time nanny before, although she did babysit small children in high school. In her time as an undergraduate, she helped a post-grad friend with her research in radical types of learning. Lucy became a staunch proponent of the theory that children learn at their own pace and should not be pressured in to milestones because of social convention. Lucy's passion was infectious, and she soon had Julia believing the same.

This had a profound impact to Sophia's upbringing. Lucy never pressured her to do anything she didn't want to do. At first, this had Julia skeptical, especially when Lucy was allowed to prance around the mansion naked except for her diaper for three days. At the same time, she was making tremendous progress in her vocabulary and motor skills, to which Julia noticed. She began to trust in Lucy's style of parenting. However, after a year, social pressure began to wear at Julia. As Sophia approached her fourth birthday, the fact that Sophia was still in diapers full-time and had not even begun to potty train gave her doubts in Lucy's decision. Julia decided to push the issue with Lucy on Sophia's birthday.

Chapter 2

"Good morning, blondie," Lucy said to Sophia as she slowly walked in to the kitchen rubbing her eyes. Lucy was surfing the web on her laptop drinking her morning coffee.

"Can I have cereal?" Sophia said.

"Well, I'm not on the clock for another 15 minutes, but since it's your birthday, let me see what I can do." Lucy replied.

"It's my birf-day. That's right! I am four years old!" Sophia exclaimed.

"Right you are. Let's get you seated," Lucy said as she picked her up. Patting her bottom, she remarked, "Does someone have a stinker butt?"

"No I don't," Sophia said with a smile.

Lucy replied "Yes you do. Let's get you changed." Lucy walked over to the nursery's changing table and gently placed Sophia on the padding. She gently unsnapped Sophia's pajamas revealing a very soaked and messy diaper.

Julia quietly approached as Lucy changed Sophia's diaper. As she looked at her big four year old girl get her messy diaper changed, she felt the shame inflicted by her friend's remarks from last week. The words, "She's still in diapers!" is still ringing in her ears. She felt so conflicted because outside the diapers and occasional bottle, Sophia was an exceptional girl. She could read and count whereas one of her friend's four year old child barely spoke.

"Lucy, can I speak with you moment when you get a chance,?" Julia whispered to Lucy.

"Sure thing Mrs. O, as soon as I get a clean diaper on this little stinker," Lucy comically replied. Moments later, having returned Sophia to the breakfast table, Lucy walked up to Julia and said, "What's on your mind?"

"It's about Sophia. I think now that she's four years old, maybe it's time we start to nudge her to use the toilet," Julia said.

"Oh no, Julia. She's not ready yet. She doesn't show any interest in the toilet and when I asked her if she wanted to try sitting on the potty chair, she said no," Lucy explained.

Julia replied, "But that was over a month ago. I just don't want her to get teased. My friend Stacy said something to me, and her son Luke has been trained since..."

Interrupting Julia, Lucy said, "Now Julia, you know better. We can't pressure her to do something she's not ready to do, no matter what friends, family, or society says. Sophia is happy, and she's progressing in so many other ways. If we push our conventions on her, we could stymie her progress in her education. Did you know I started to teach her Spanish? She can say 30 words."

Julia's jaw dropped and she then said, "Well, I suppose you could be right."

"I'll help get Stacy off your back. I'll talk to her at the birthday party. You should probably buy Sophia some more dresses and bigger pants to help conceal her diapers. I understand how bad peer pressure can be, and there's nothing wrong with avoiding it where possible."

Lucy replied, "I don't think so. I'm going to need to talk to Jack when he gets back to town on Saturday. He's made a few comments to me about her lack of progress, and I'm going to need to convince him."

Later that day, Sophia had woken from her nap. She was very hot due to the thick blanket and pile of stuff animals she used for cover. She decided to remove her little stretch pants and climb out of her crib. As soon as she landed on the floor, the urge to pee was very noticeable and she squatted right there and released her bladder. A full minute later, her diaper was soaked front to back and she moved over to her play vanity set. She pretended to put on makeup everyday and put a silk scarf around her neck. In the mirror, she gazed at her own blue eyes and blond hair and remarked out loud, "You look beautiful."

As Sophia continued to talk to herself mimicking her mom's routine preparing for a elegant night out, Julia heard Sophia's pip squeak voice from her office. She crept over to Sophia's door and lovingly watched Sophia play in from of her tiny vanity. As she gazed on her diaper clad daughter for the second time of the day, she felt love, not shame. She realized how happy and intelligent her little girl was. She thought on Lucy's earlier comments and started to buy in to her line of thinking.

Chapter 3

Saturday had arrived. Sophia's birthday party had been planned with guests arriving at 2:00. Attending were four of Julia's friends with children. Julia's mother was also flying in for the party. Last but not least was Sophia's father. He rarely came home anymore, but for this occasion, he was making a special trip. It was a hot summer day. Julia dressed Sophia in a bright yellow sundress. She decided not to put a diaper cover on her since the forecast called for 90 degrees. First to arrive was Julia's mother, Nancy.

Nancy was a slender, elegant woman. She had medium length, blonde dyed hair. Nancy had dressed like it was a business meeting rather than a child's birthday party. Nancy motions over to her daughter and said, "Honey, fix me a Tom Collins please."

"Mother, it's barely passed lunchtime. Can't you wait until the other guests arrive," Julia replied.

"I had dreadful flight. It will calm my nerves," said Nancy. Just then, Sophia ran into the room and stood in front of her grandmother.

"Hello grandma. I made you a card," Sophia said she handed her a card made of red construction paper.

Nancy excepted the card and held it up to her face and read, "I love you grandmother, "written in crayon and spelled perfectly. Nancy said, "Why thank you, Sophia. This is a lovely card." Julia had arrived with the Tom Collins. Nancy took an immediate sip and leaned back on the couch. "Now run along so that I may talk to your mother," she said. Sophia ran up to the nursery without hesitation. Julia sat in the chair across from her mother. Nancy turn to her daughter said, "You look tired. Are you getting enough rest?

Julia replied, "It's not easy with Jack always being gone. Lucy is a great help. I don't know what I would do without her."

Nancy said, "A good nanny is very hard to find. I went through three before I found Shelly. Do you remember Trudy?

"No, I only remember Emily," Julia said.

"I had to fire her right around your fourth birthday. She was completely incompetent. You don't remember her? Curly brown hair, slightly overweight," Nancy exclaimed.

"I don't think so. Why was she so incompetent?" Julia asked.

"She failed to potty train you. You ruined the upholstery on my favorite arm chair on more than one occasion," Nancy quipped.

Julia gasped, "I wasn't potty trained at age 4? What was the problem?"

Nancy explained, "The problem was Trudy. She had no backbone. I was covering D.C. for the paper at the time, and every time I came home it would be this excuse or the next. I gave her an ultimatum and she didn't live up to it. The next nanny took the bull by the horn and had you out of diapers, but you were so emotional over Trudy's departure that you stopped speaking. It wasn't until Emily arrived that things settled. I'd say you were closing on five before I could trust you wouldn't soil yourself in public."

"Mother, that sounds awful. I must have been traumatized to not remember that time," Julia lamented.

"Hush now, you were fine. If you only know the money we spent on nannies and doctors. You were well cared for," Nancy rebutted.

"Money isn't everything. Maybe I needed my mother," said Julia. Sophia returned to the room and began pulling on Julia. Julia asked, "What is it, honey?"

"Poopy," said Sophia.

Nancy overheard and said, "Does she still need your help in the toilet?"

Julia replied, "Not exactly." She picked up her daughter and carried her upstairs to the nursery. A few minutes later she returned.

Nancy motioned for Sophia to come to her. She picked her up and placed her on her knee having felt the tell tale sign of padding on her bottom. She then asked Sophia, "Why are you still in diapers? Don't you want to use the toilet like a proper little lady?" Sophia shrugged it off, sliced off Nancy's knee and ran to kitchen. Nancy turned to Julia and said, "What are you going to do about this situation?"

Julia said, "There is no situation. She's not ready."

"Balderdash," Nancy shouted. "You need to take this head on." Just then, the doorbell rang.

"Hush now. Please don't speak of it amongst the company of my friends," Julia whispered as she walked towards the door. Julia's friend Stacy and her son Luke had arrived. Julia welcomed them in to her home. Soon there after, the remaining guests arrived. Six children had joined the party ranging in age from three to four years of age. Julia had hired a magician to entertain the kids. As the magician's act began, a few of the mothers gathered in back and began chatting.

Stacy remarked to Julia, "Sophia looks adorable today. She is such a happy child. I don't think I've ever seen her meltdown like my little Luke."

Julia replied, "She's our little princess, but trust me, she has her moments."

Julia's friend Christine said, "Well my little Tonya this morning had quite the blowup this morning getting dressed. She refused to wear the underwear I laid out for her and said she could only wear underwear with flowers on it."

Julia's other friend Anna said, "Well at least yours wants to wear underwear. My little Margaret is back in Pull-Ups. She was having at least three accidents a day last week, and it pushed me to surrender."

Stacy replied, "Anna, you should never go back to diapers. It will confuse her. Once we started potty training Luke, the diapers went in to the garbage."

"I know, I know, but it's so tough when your out in public or at someone else's house. She's three and half years old. I'm such a failure," Anna replied.

Julia jumped in the conversation and said, "You're not a failure Anna. Every child is different and learns at their own pace."

Anna then asked Julia, "When did Sophia train, Julia?" At that moment, Julia turned beat red and Stacy began to look away.

Before Julia could answer, Julia's mother Nancy stepped in the conversation and said, "Don't ask my daughter for advice. My granddaughter is still in diapers."

Sensing the tension, Christine tried to diffuse the conversation by saying, "Like Julia said, every child learns at her own pace. Sophia is probably just regressing. It's just a phase and you can nip it in the bud. Just put her back in undies. Let her use a diaper for poops if she refuses to go. She won't like the feeling of being wet."

At that moment, Julia thought to herself, "Why do I feel this shame. Just tell them the truth."

She raised her head, turned to Christine and said, "She's not regressing.. She's never been in undies, and she's just not ready yet."

Christine had a look of shock. She replied, "You mean you haven't even tried potty training her?"

"No, Christine, and it's not that big of a deal. We're taking the child led approach. Right Lucy?" Julia said as she turned to Lucy.

"Right, Julia. I have a friend that’s doing a study at Oregon Pacific University on children that have a more relaxed, child-led upbringing. There's a corollary to faster learning, and reduced mental illness later in childhood and possibly adulthood. Sophia is definitely ahead of the curve in vocabulary."

"So what if she never wants to go to the potty. Are you going to send her in Kindergarten in diapers?" interjected Stacy.

Julia responded, "I'm sure that won't happen. I have faith in her." The conversation shifted to other motherly topics.

Julia felt relieved that she could be honest, and no longer was intimidated by her friends. After the magician finished his show, the kids played in the back yard. There was a spread of snacks, drinks, toys, and even a bouncy castle. After eating, most of the kids went to the bouncy castle to play. As Sophia bounced, her yellow sundress would lift and reveal her wet diaper. After much cajoling, Julia convinced Sophia to take a break to get her diaper changed. As she was leading her in to the house, she found her friend Anna frantically rummaging through her purse with her daughter Margaret standing next to her. Julia asked, "Anna, is there something you need?"

"Oh, it looks like I forgot to pack extra pull-up for Margaret," Anna replied.

"Follow us. We're headed up to the nursery to get Sophia changed. You can take one of hers," Julia said. Anna picked up Margaret and followed Julia up to the nursery. Upon arriving, she turned to Anna and asked, "Number one or number two?"

"Two." Anna replied in a disappointed tone.

"Well then you go first. Help yourself to the supplies on the changing table," Julia said.

Anna lifted Margaret on the table and pulled down her pants. She remarked, "You wet your pull-up too? Oh Margaret. Why didn't you go the potty?"

Margaret sheepishly replied, "I don't know. It just came out."

Anna looked at the stacks of diapers realizing that there were no pull-ups in the table. Hesitating for a moment, she grabbed a diaper, held it in front of Margaret, and said, "Maybe I should put you back in these for a while. Do you want to be back in diapers."

Sophia jumped up and down. She said, "Yes, yes, yes.." Julia hushed her and reminded her that this wasn't her decision.

Margaret looked at Sophia and then turned back to her mom, and quietly said, "Okay. Diapers." Anna tore the sides of the pull-up, wiped her down clean, and fastened the diaper to her daughter. As Anna was picking up Margaret's pants, Margaret jumped down from the changing table and pointed at the Sesame Street characters while giggling. Sophia lifted her skirt and showed Margaret that she had the same characters on hers too.

Anna said to Margaret, "Young lady, you need to put your pants on." She dressed her and waited for Julia to finish changing Sophia before returning to the party.

Upon returning downstairs, Julia was approached by her mother. "All these children are unruly. Why didn't you have the party somewhere else? I'm sure that boy over there scuffed the wall," Nancy said as she pointed to Luke.

"Mother, please. Why don't you relax a little more? They are just children being children. Besides, the party is almost over," Julie replied.

"You're right. Another Tommy Collins should help," Nancy said holding out her glass.

Julia gave her a disappointed look while slowly taking the glass before heading to the bar. Although she disapproved of her mother drinking in front of children, she secretly hoped that this would pacify her incessant nagging.

Anna walked up to Julia at the bar and said, "Would you like me to help corral the little ones for cake and presents?"

"That's so nice. Please," Julia replied.

After the birthday song and cake, the gifts were laid on the floor for Sophia to open. She was jumping up and down and twirling in anticipation. She was also playing with her yellow dress and pulled the hem over her head in an act of silliness. Julia turned a little red in embarrassment seeing her 4 year old child revealing her diaper to all of her friends, but she reminded herself not to feel that way.

Little Margaret grabbed her gift for Sophia and brought it over to her shouting, "Open this one. This one."

As Margaret was bending down to place it at Sophia's feet, Luke noticed the diaper sticking out over her pants and commented aloud, "Does every kid here wear diapers?"

Little Tonya, turned to her mom and said, "Mommy, I need diaper!"

Her mother Christine was caught by surprise, thought for moment, and said, "If you wear diapers, you won't be able to wear your pretty panties with flowers on it."

Tonya stood up and without hesitation, pulled up her blue dress, and pulled down her panties. Christine grabbed her and pulled back up her panties whispering in her ear, "You do not take off your panties in public, missy." Julia and Anna giggled at the cuteness of the moment, while Luke's mother Stacy was on the verge of a nervous break down.

Stacy thought to herself that this regressive behavior was now infectious and she needed to get Luke out of there before he starts wanting diapers. Stacey pulled her phone from her purse and pretended as if she got a new text message. She said loudly, "Oh dear. It looks like Matt needs me home to help him...help him...uh...I mean, we have a meeting with the interior designer that I forgot about. Come on Luke."

"I don't want to go, mommy!" Luke cried.

Julia, sensing the true motive, didn't offer any resistance. She handed Luke a goodie bag and thanked him for coming. Sophia was too engrossed in her new toys to wish him goodbye. Tonya was now in full tantrum, kicking and screaming on the floor. Christine calmly waked over to the couch and grabbed her purse. She pulled out a pull-up and kneeled beside Tonya and proceeded to swap her underwear for the pull-up. After Christine was done, Tonya scurried off to the kitchen. Julia then asked Christine, "Does she need something?"

"She needs to poop. She rarely uses the toilet for number two, only for number one. I let her use a diaper, that is when she tells me before she goes. To be honest, I've been embarrassed to talk about it with others given her fourth birthday was over three months ago," Christine lamented. "I thought I was the only one of us going though this struggle before today."

Meanwhile in the kitchen, Lucy was putting some dishes in the dishwasher when she sees out of the corner of her eye a brown haired, girl with brown pigtails in a blue dress crawl under the kitchen table. She dismisses it as a game of hide and seek. As she closes the dishwasher, she hears grunting coming from under the kitchen table. Out of concern for Tonya's well-being, she walks over to the table, and crouches down to check on her. Immediately, she is confronted by Tonya's pull-up covered tush exposed from her blue dress as she is on all fours pushing a lump in to her padded rear-end. Not wanting to disturb her, she walks back behind the kitchen counter and waits. After a couple more minutes, Tonya waddles from beneath the table. Lucy asks little Tonya, "Are you done going poop?"

Tonya replies, "Yes."

Lucy asked, "Do you want me to get your mom to change you?"

Tonya smiles and replies, "No. I go play with the toys." She then darts back in to the living room and plops down next to Sophia.

Christine noticed Tonya sitting next to Sophia, walks over to her, and picks her up. She whispers, "Don't squish the poop. It makes it harder for mommy to clean you." Tonya giggled all the way to the bathroom. Julia followed and asked Christine if she needed anything and got a no thank you response.

Shortly thereafter, Jack walked through the door. Sophia ran in to his arms and was lifted in the air in an embrace that lasted a full minute. He then put her back on the ground and walked to his wife to great her with a kiss on the cheek. Julia had the look of disgust because of his tardiness, but not that of surprise.

"There's some leftover food in the kitchen. Go help yourself," Julia said.

"I had lunch at the club. I'm good," Jack replied.

"Jack, seriously. You went to the club instead of coming home for your daughter's birthday party. It's Saturday for god sake," Julia replied angrily.

Jack said, "Business can't wait. I'm trying to get a leap on our new early education software line. The procurement manager from.."

Julia interrupted, "I don't want to hear it. We'll talk about this later. Anna and Christine are still here."

"I'll make it up to you. I owe you one," Jack quipped.

Julia quickly replied, "You owe me 50 favors by my count."

After the party concluded, and all of the guests had left, Lucy sat down a took out her phone to text her friend Monica at the University.

Lucy: Hey Monica. I think I found you two more candidates for your study

Monica: Really? What types?

Lucy: 3.5yo regression, 4yo in pull-ups

Monica: Have you talked to Julia yet?

Lucy: No. I can't rush it. I don't want to lose my job

Monica: I understand

Lucy: Coming home to see your folks?

Monica: Next month

Lucy: I've got an idea. E-Mail me a copy of your paper

Monica: Remember, I need at least five in Dallas to get my grant

Lucy: I'm on it

Chapter 4

On Sunday morning, Jack woke at the crack of dawn, put on his workout clothes and left for a run. By the time he returned to the house, Lucy and Sophia were in the kitchen together. Lucy was at the stove making pancakes. Sophia was sitting at the table drinking milk from a bottle while flipping through a picture book on animals. Jack crept behind Lucy, reached over her shoulder and grabbed a hot pancake from the plate on the stove. As his arm brushed Lucy's auburn hair toward the stove, she yelped and turned towards Jack in surprise.

"Oh, Mr. O. It's you. You scared me," Lucy exclaimed. As she caught her breath, she looked in his eyes and saw that look that creeped her out. Jack would give her that look on the rare occasions he was home and Julia wasn't around.

"Sorry. I just was going for a pancake," he said as he held the half eaten pancake up with a smirk on his face.

"All done," Sophia said as she held up her now empty bottle. Lucy turned her attention to her grabbed her bottle and returned her attention to pouring the next pancake.

Jack opened the fridge and grabbed a sports drink and took a gulp. He watched Sophia scoot off the seat revealing her diaper hiding under her nightie. As she left the kitchen to grab a new book, he said, "Lucy. Julia told me last night about your recommendation on Sophia's potty training, or should I say, lack there of. I can't afford it to look like we're in to wacky parenting methods. Some of Julia's friends are wives of my business partners. Perception is everything."

"Well, Mr. O., it's not wacky. We're following the advice of some of the latest child education studies," Lucy said.

"That's great and all, but I'm concerned that it looks strange," Jack replied.

Lucy replied, "Well I told Julia that it may be best to help conceal it in public with some new clothes."

"Alright. As long you understand where I'm coming from, I'm okay with it. I'll give you a few hundred dollars and you'll take care of it. Understand?

"Yes, sir." Lucy humbly replied.

At that moment, Julia entered the kitchen and inquired, "What are you two talking about?"

Jack answered, "I spoke with Lucy, and gave her my decision on Sophia's rearing on my terms."

"I see. So just we are clear, no more nasty remarks about Sophia's lack of progress?" Julia asked.

"Yeah, whatever. I just don't want to hear about it from Bob or Jerry. I'm giving her some money to get some new clothes," Jack replied.

Later that day when Jack was out of the house and Sophia was taking her nap, Lucy approached Julia with a large stack of paper under her arm and asked, "Mrs. O. Do you have a second to talk?"

"Sure, what's on your mind?" Julia asked.

"I just wanted to say how much I admired the way you handled the potty conversation your friends at the party yesterday. Your honesty and candor not only helped you, but seemed to help Anna too." Lucy said as she sat next to her on the living room couch.

Julia replied, "Thanks. I think I helped Christine too. Her daughter Tonya is struggling with her potty training too, but she said she was embarrassed to admit it to us."

"That's great. I know a way you can help them even more. My friend Monica in Oregon got funding an advanced early education program and is considering starting a group in Dallas." Lucy explained.

Julia inquired, "So what does advanced early education entail?"

Lucy responded, "Well, for one there is advanced language studies. Teaching an additional language simultaneous to English. Second, for the kids that are ready, she uses a combination of proven and experimental techniques to get fundamentals of reading and math years before they would normally be introduced in a normal school setting. Lastly, there's a prescriptive technique to teaching social behavior and achieving milestones that puts the kids in charge...totally child-led advancement. See, her theory is if you don't push, rather give children an alternate sequence to learning and remove certain distractions early on, they will better geared toward learning and critical thinking. It's fascinating stuff."

Julia then asked, "That sounds very interesting, but what makes you think Sophia and my friends kids fit in this program?"

Lucy replied, "They meet the qualification. She's looking for kids between the ages of three and four and a half, at least one parent that has the time during the day to attend check-ins, and the willingness to participate in the work plan, and a third requirement..."

Julia took the bait and asked, "What's the third requirement?"

"The kids...well, they need to still be in diapers or struggling with training," Lucy said softly.

"I don't understand. What does that have to do with advanced learning," Julia inquired.

"Her theory is that pushing kids in to doing things like potty training before they're ready or willing is common place and create barriers and distrust. It's a theory routed in attachment parenting, unschooling, and child-led education. In addition, her earlier studies prove that kids are learning the most rapidly during that brief moment between infant and pre-schooler. By extended that period, kids develop deeper cognitive skills and can literally improve their high IQ potential." Lucy then hands Julia the thick stack of paper and says, "Here is her thesis. Feel free to read it.

Julia's intrigue was caught. She grabbed the thesis and began skimming through the table of contents. She said to Lucy, "I'm interested in learning more. Give me a few days to read this and we'll talk some more." Lucy left the room and went to go check on Sophia. Lucy turned the TV off and began to read. She was captivated.

Lucy came back in the room with Sophia in her arms after changing her wet nap time diaper and saw Julia engrossed in her reading. She thought for a moment and said, "Why don't I take Sophia shopping for some new clothes."

Julia replied without taking her eyes of the paper, "That's fine. Take my car."

Hours later, Julia was midway through the document when Jack came home. He asked, "What are your reading?"

Julia responded, "Oh, just a research paper that Lucy brought to my attention. You know how I like keeping up on my old major. That reminds me, I'd like to make a donation to a school out west doing some interesting research. Stacy is a always talking about all the money they are throwing their charities. I think we need to step up more if we want to stay in good social standing. It's all she ever talks about."

"How much are you thinking?" Jack asked.

"$20,000 for the year," Julia said unabashedly.

"Make it $30,000. I need to show Bob that I'm committed to getting tight with the University crowd. This new early education software suite could make me a lot of money. I'm in line to get the California and Pacific Northwest markets added to my territory."

"Yes, dear." Julia responded with a smile.

Chapter 5

Two months later, Julia held a play date at the kids play park in her gated community. It was a hot and humid summer day, but the park had a fountain play area for the kids and small shaded picnic tables equipped with water misters for the adults. It was Lucy's day off, so Julia was in the rare position to be 100% responsible for Sophia's needs. She dressed her that morning in one of the recently purchased long dresses purchased by Lucy weeks ago. While long, it was made of a very light synthetic material that was breathable and perfect for the hot Texas climate. She had also brushed Sophia's long blond hair in to a pony tail. She even remembered to put on copious sunblock on her daughter's fair skin and pack diapers and wipes in her fashionable, purse-like diaper bag.

Anna and Christine arrived with Margaret and Tonya right on time. The kids ran out of their respective SUVs straight across the grass towards the water fountains. Julia intercepted them to allow their mother's time to catch up and settle in. As she grabbed them, she noticed that Margaret's butt was padded unmistakably with a diaper, poorly hidden under her little beige stretch pants. Although Tonya was in a short skirt and tank top, there was no reveal of what was underneath. Julia's interest was motivated based on the conversation she was about to have with her two close friends.

Having now reached the picnic area, Christine greeted both Julia and Anna with, "Hey y'all. You didn't tell me this park had a water area. I didn't bring a bathing suit."

Julia said, "Don't worry, I didn't bring one either. I was going to tell Sophia to stay on the slides and swings, and maybe dip her feet if it gets hot?"

"Good luck with that," Anna joked.

"Mommy, can we go play now," Sophia asked.

Julia answered, "Go ahead, but try not and get your clothes wet."

"Okay. Come Maggie, come Tonya," Sophia said as she grabbed her friends leading them to the park.

Julia opened her cooler, took out three bottles of iced tea, and handed them to her friends. They sat down at the table and started to chat, periodically looking over to check on the girls. After a few minutes, Julia changed the conversation and asked Christine, "So have you started to look in to any pre-K programs for Tonya."

Christine replied, "I have, but I'm not confident about our prospects over at the Secours Academy. I swear, it's harder to get in to there than Harvard. The interview was brutal. They also have a pretty strict rule on potty training. With the number of accidents she's been having this week, I'm not confident I can get her fully trained in 7 more weeks if she gets admitted. What about you?"

"I found something that I think will really work for Sophia. It's more exclusive than Secours with only 5 open spots per class. It's run by graduate students out of Oregon Pacific University." Julia continued to share more and more details about the philosophy, curriculum, and results from the last class in Oregon that she read about in Monica's research papers, but she left out some of the key details on potty training. As both Anna and Christine asked follow-up questions, Tonya approached the table in soaking wet clothes. He pink skirt, weighted with water, had slid down several inches exposing the top inch of a pink pull-up.

"Oh, baby. Why did you get so wet? I don't have a change of clothes," Christine said to her daughter as she lifted her shirt. She wrung the water out, and laid it on the concrete pad to let the sun dry it out. She proceeded to do the same with her skirt leaving her without clothes in a drooping, wet pull-up. "Maybe we should head home," Christine said to Julia and Anna.

Julia replied, "Nonsense. There's no one here except us, and I brought extra sunscreen. In this heat, with this sun, her clothes will dry out in no time flat."

"That may be true, but I didn't bring extra underwear or pull-ups. I don't want her to get a rash. That pull-up looks like it's going to explode. It's like she jumped in a pool." Christine lamented.

Julia grabbed her purse, and pulled out a size 6 diaper from within. She put it in front of Christine and said, "Here, use this. I have plenty."

Christine hesitated. The thought of Tonya dressed only in a baby diaper in public was somewhat repugnant to her: a sign of failure. She then thought of her new German sports SUV and didn't want to risk getting feces on her fine leather interior. She grabbed the diaper and walked over to Tonya. She quickly ripped the sides of the pull-up and let it plop to the ground. She then tried putting the diaper on her while standing up, but failed to make it work, so she instructed Tonya to lie down. Lifting her legs, she carefully slid the diaper under her bum and pulled the diaper up her front to get fastened. After applying some sunscreen, she patted her on the bum and sent her on her back to play with her friends. The image of Tonya scurrying in a baby diaper bought back old memories to her mind, back to a time when the word accident wasn't a part of her daily vocabulary.

Christine sat back down, and reopened the conversation with, "So I assume this program is okay with your laissez-faire approach to Sophia's toilet habits."

Julia didn't like Christine's tone, but chose to not react with offense. She instead replied, "They have a more relaxed approach with the potty requirement. I really think both you and Anna should come by next week. Monica will be doing a presentation to the moms that have applied and those that are interested. It's two hours during the day, and they'll have a free daycare for the little ones."

Anna said, "I'll come. It sounds interesting."

Christine said, "Okay. I'll come to, but no promises, Julia."

The ladies shifted gears, and began unpacking their picnic lunches and juice boxes for the girls. Julia grabbed a sippy cup out of her cooler and set it next to Sophia's sandwich and finger food. Upon calling the girls, Sophia arrived first and her clothes were bone dry. Margaret followed with her pants soaking wet from playing in the water fountain. Her mother, Anna, proceeded to remove her stretch pants, and placed her at the picnic table with her diaper exposed. Tonya waddled back last with a very droopy diaper. Seemingly unfazed, she climbed on to the picnic bench and sat on her squishy diaper. Julia quietly observed the three little diapered girls at the table, and felt comfort knowing that Sophia had friends like her, still in diapers. She no longer felt the guilt and shame that she experience weeks ago. She just hoped that her friends would join the program.

A week had passed and Julia was en route to the open house at the Accelerated Early Learning Program. Both Anna and Christine had both applied and passed the pre-interview. Although Julia was a large benefactor of the program, she was not previously permitted access to the facility or privy to all the details of the program. Monica, the program director, was adamant about her following the process the same as every other parent for the benefit of her and Sophia. Julia not knowing all the details gave her some anxiety as she pulled in to their parking lot. In some ways, she felt like it was her first day of school again.

She proceeded to exit her SUV and remove Sophia from her booster seat. As she walked into the large office building in suburban Dallas, she saw Anna in the lobby with her daughter Margaret. They proceeded together in to the elevator and up to the 3rd floor. Exiting the elevator, the approached a solid wood door marked “Suite 320”. Upon entering was a reception desk. They both signed in and were asked to drop the kids in the playroom prior to entering the conference room. The kids each got name tag stickers and their photograph was taken. They began jumping with excitement when they heard the word, “playroom”. Walking in to the playroom, both Sophia and Tonya were overwhelmed with the activities of various delight: play doh, ball pit, doll houses, toy cars, and much much more. Lucy, who was supervising the kids along with two other women caretakers, quickly separated Julia and Anna from their daughters and asked them to proceed to the main conference room.

The conference room was set up classroom style with a giant projection screen at the front. Shortly later, all ten mothers were seated.

Monica began the presentation and said, “Welcome ladies to the Accelerated Early Learning Program. You and your exceptional children are privileged to have access to the most advanced learning techniques in the United States. Today, we’ll review the curriculum and what we need you to do to ensure your children excel in the program.” Julia was beaming with excitement as Monica detailed the individual attention, rapid learning, and long-term impacts to learning. The other mother’s were similarly blown away with the sophistication and thoroughness. Monica ended the first part of the presentation with a chart describing how a child following the program could be at 3rd grade levels of reading and math by the end of kindergarten. They would even be conversant in Spanish.

Christine leaned over to Julia and whispered, “This is amazing.”

“I know. Monica and the team are brilliant and so dedicated,” Julia replied.

Monica continued the presentation and said, “Much of what we discussed is built on the foundation of having your children in the right mindset for learning. Much of my team’s research has been on the psychological and behavioral traits necessary for this rapid learning. You see, babies and toddlers learn new skills faster than older children or adults. It’s not easily perceptible because their baseline knowledge and skill set is immature compared to that of an adult, but when you look at the neuron connections required in the brain to learn how to grab, walk, and talk for the first time, it’s much more complex than learning algebra or recognizing words. We have developed techniques to put your return your children’s brains in to that rapid learning mode. This is done in three phases: inculcation, regression, and rapid progression.”

Anna raised her hand and asked, “What does inculcation mean?”

Monica answered, “It means to teach habits through persistent instruction. We will begin by completely entrenching them in to the right habits and behaviors necessary for rapid learning. It’s also know as the transition phase. We’re going to need your help to maintain these same habits at home too. It will require taking a couple steps backwards before we can get them to leap forward. Part of the reason your children were selected was they had some immaturity in the areas where they will be required to regress. By a show of hands, who here has a child that is struggling with potty training or hasn’t show interest in using the toilet?”

All ten of the mothers slowly raised heir hands reluctantly. Monica continued, “And, how many here have children that either still suck their thumb or pacifier, sleep in a crib, or drink from a sippie cup?”

This time, seven mothers raised their hands. Monica resumed, “How many mothers here sometimes feel like failures for their children’s immaturity?” All ten raised their hands again.

Monica then said, “You aren’t failures. Your children haven’t failed or are behind. They are in a prime position to focus their attention to other pursuits, but first we have to put them in a place of comfort.” Monica then clicked to the next page in the presentation showing a picture of a preschool classroom. “This was our first program two years ago in Medford, Oregon,” Monica said as she continued to advance to the next photo.

She continued, “And, here were our first three students. Just know, I have permission from their parents to show these photos, but the names I’ll use have been changed for anonymity. At the start of the program, Harry was 4 years 2 months old, Sue was 3 years 11 months, and John was 4 years 5 months. The first step in the inculcate phase is to welcome the kids to their new reality, address their fears, and socialize them with their peers to accelerate to acceptance. There may be parts that will seem excessive and shocking, but by then end of this slide deck, I’m confident that you’ll appreciate the results. Sue had the easiest transition. As you can see in this photo, she still wore diapers in the daytime. Getting her to wear her class uniform was a snap.” The next photo showed Sue wearing a blue t-shirt with matching pink croc-styled shoes, but no pants. Her diaper was exposed.

Monica continued, “Harry was more difficult in transition. As you can see here, he wore training pants during parents orientation. He was actively using the potty for number one, but he was reported to never having used his potty for number number two and had frequent bouts of constipation. He wasn’t thrilled to return to diapers initially, but as you can see here, by day 3, he was a happy participant.” The last photo showed Harry in the same class uniform with an exposed diaper.

Christine leaned over as said with a gasp to Julia, “You can tell that his diaper is wet. I thought she said he was using the potty for number one?” Julia nodded her head nervously.

“John here had the most difficult transition. You can see that he wore underwear, but he was reported to have accidents of both types and would wet the bed nightly. If I recall right, he wore pull-ups at night time, but he had been out of daytime diapers since he was 3 1/2 years old. Poor little guy did not want to return to diapers. After five days closely working with him and his parents, he was able to join in class uniform. It is important to note that conformity with the class uniform is requirement to attend class after the first day. Here you can see him willingly being led to the changing table after using his diaper,” Monica explained.

Whispered comments flew between mothers. One woman spoke up and said, “My husband will kill me if we put Timmothy back in diapers full time. He’ll think I’m crazy. It is crazy!”

Monica calmly resumed, “Ladies, I know this may be shocking to some of you but if you give me a few more minutes, I think you’ll see the wisdom in our approach. So, when John joined the class in the second week, the transition continued while the kids began the Sprint Curriculum, but at this point, the sprints were mostly fun activities every 15 minutes designed to get the kids enjoying coming to class. We also balance fun with nutrition and hygiene. We use charts and rewards to motivate the kids to drink water, eat their snacks, and have their diapers changed. Every four stars earned earns them a treat like a go-gurt or a sprint with the activity of their choice. In the first few weeks, we really want encourage our kids not be retentive. As such, we supplement their diets with fiber and prune snacks. It’s really important that the kids use their diapers fully in class amongst their peers. It reinforces that the regression is acceptable and positive. We provide two stars for every messy change.”

Christine stood up and said, “I don’t understand any of this. How does going backwards in potty training help them learn faster?”

Monica replied, “For kids this age, wearing and using diapers is the thing they associate the most with being a baby, but it’s not the only thing. Each child is unique and may require other measures, like binkies or crib sleeping, but we find diapers to be the most effective. The infantile state of mind is what we’re after. Once we’ve observed noticeable regression, we begin weaving the academics in the Sprint Curriculum. In this photo, you can see Sue writing out the whole alphabet. This was accomplished a mere two months into the program, when she was only 4 years 1 month old. John here is writing out all the numbers up to 30 in this photo, shortly before he turned 5.” The photo showed John sitting at a desk wearing his blue shirt and diaper writing out his numbers while sucking on a pacifier.

Christine still unconvinced asked, “But how will they grow up? I mean, how will they get out of the baby behavior?”

Monica answered, “It’s a commitment for a time, but all of our kids have successfully rejoined normal classrooms. Let me show you. Here you can see Sue at her kindergarten graduation. She was 5 years 9 months here in the graduation photos.” The photos showed her smiling wearing a graduation cap, red shirt, and diapered bottom. “Mind you, she had never used the toilet up to this point but was easily trained over the summer prior to going to school using our plan. She tested well in to third grade, but her parents decided to have her attend second grade so that the age difference wouldn’t affect her as much socially,” Monica said. A new photo was displayed with her normally dressed in a second grade classroom.

Monica then said, “Here’s a picture of both Harry and John at graduation. Harry was 6 years old, and John was three months older. They had grown quite close.” Both kids were photographed laughing while on their backs with feet in the air. Both their diapers looked discolored and and bulky — very wet to Julia’s experienced eye. Monica continued, “John enrolled as a third grader at a prestigious private school, and Harry continued his education through homeschool with his mom.” She advanced to a picture of John playing soccer in a normal school uniform behind a school, and then a picture of Harry sitting at a kitchen table wearing loose fitting jogging pants and a shirt. Julia thought she saw a small glimpse of white plastic sticking out from the jogging pants, but the photo was advanced before she could take a second glance.

Timothy’s mother spoke up, “It certainly looks like these techniques work, but what do I say to my relatives when we show up to Christmas with Timothy in diapers?”

Monica replied, “Dealing with family and neighbors can be difficult. Our recommendation is that you be honest with those closest to you. We have a private website with videos that can help explain. For extended family and friends, it may be useful to tell a little white lie. UTI’s, encopresis, and constipation are all acute medical conditions that can lead to temporary incontinence. Before I take any more questions, let’s watch some of the parent testimonials.”

Meanwhile in the playroom, Sophia was entrenched in play with her friends Margaret and Tonya. They spent most of their time finger painting and were wearing paint covered smocks. There were two other girls in the playroom as well as five boys. One of the caretakers was busy taking candid photographs of the kids while the other was taking copious notes. The playroom also had a snack table that was popular with all the kids. Sophia ate copious amounts of apple slices, while Tonya and Margaret were eating numerous fig newtons and prunes. All the kids were enjoying the juice boxes.

After about an hour, one of the boys, Jeremy, was approached by Lucy. Lucy asked, “Can I check your pull-up?”

Jeremy smiled and said, “Okay. I went poop.”

Lucy replied, “That’s what I thought. Come over to the changing table with me. Your mom left me an extra pull-up.” There were two oversized changing tables to side of the room, each equipped with some block steps. Jeremy walked up the steps, climbed on to the table, and rolled on to his back. Lucy put on vinyl gloves, unbuttoned his jeans and slid them off exposing his blue pull-up. She carefully tore each side and pulled his diaper down exposing his mess. She carefully cleaned him with wipes and commented, “It looks like your pull-up is dry.”

Jeremy replied, “I use the big boy potty for pee pee. I only pee pee in the pull-up sometimes.”

Lucy slid the pull-up on and began to put Jeremy’s pants back on when she felt a tug on her leg. It was a red-headed boy named Caleb. He asked, “Does that boy have messy diapers?”

“Well not anymore. Why don’t you play with him,” she said as she lifted Jeremy off the table and back on to the floor.

Caleb asked him, “What’s your name?”

“Jeremy. I don’t wear diapers, I wear big boy pants, see,” Jeremy said as he tugged on the top of his pull-up.

Caleb looked sad. He would sometimes get teased in daycare for still being in diapers. He thought he finally met someone that looked his age still in diapers too. He decided not to say anything about his diaper until Lucy chimed in and asked, “Hey Caleb. Before you go, let’s go ahead and check your diaper.” Lucy pulled on his gym shorts and squished the diaper above his onesie. She commented, “It looks like someone’s wet. Let’s get you all dry.”

As Lucy helped Caleb on to the changing table, Jeremy was shocked that a boy as tall as him was still in diapers. Jeremy’s dad and older brother told him that no four year olds still wear diapers, but Caleb certainly looked like a four year old too. He asked Lucy, “How old is that boy?”

Lucy replied, “Well, his tag says he’s four years old, just like you.”

Before long, five of the kids had their diapers or pull-ups changed, including Sophia. Tonya was amongst one of the hold outs, and was one of two that was dressed in underwear. Upon finishing her second juice box, she walked up to Lucy and asked to use the potty. Lucy walked her over to the receptionist who escorted Tonya to the bathroom in the hallway outside their suite. After being led to the first stall, Tonya was confronted with an adult toilet with no potty seat. She had never used a big toilet without a potty seat before. The receptionist had closed the door and she was left alone in the stall. Tonya pulled down her panties from under her skirt and proceeded to climb up the toilet. On the second attempt to mount the seat, she slipped and fell back to the floor. The automatic toilet then suddenly flushed, which startled Tonya into the corner of the stall. It was much louder than any other toilet she had ever been near. After about thirty seconds, the receptionist opened the stall door and asked, “Are you all done?”

Tonya wanting to get out of the stall nodded her head, pulled up her panties and walked out of the stall.

The receptionist said, “We have a special sink near the playroom in our class that you can use made for kids.” She walked Tonya back in to the suite and took her to the small kids sink for her to wash her hands. Tonya squirmed as the warm water hit her hands as she now desperately needed to go pee. She decided to sit down near the blocks and try to hold it.

Sophia came up to Tonya and asked, “Where did you go, Tonya?”

“I went to the potty,” Tonya said as she squirmed on the floor.

“You wanna finger paint some more?” Sophia asked.

“No. I’m gunna sit here. I’m tired,” Tonya replied.

Margaret came over and plopped down in front of Tonya. She blurted out, “I like blocks too,” while proceeding to get on her knees and begin constructing a tower. Sophia got down on the floor and started helping her with her with the construction.

After a couple minutes, Margaret’s stomach began to rumble loudly, so loud that Tonya asked about the noise. Margaret, unaccustomed to cramping this severe, froze as she was on her hands and knees. She sometimes prefers privacy for her bowel movements, but she didn’t feel like she could move without letting go. On the second wave of cramps, she gave in and released her control. With the release, came a loud fart that not only caught the ear of Tonya and Sophia, but of three other kids and Lucy. Lucy could easily tell what was happening and decided to give her a couple minutes before taking her to get changed. Margaret pushed the last bit out giving herself immense relief to point of letting out an audible sigh. Sophia ran up to Lucy and shouted, “Margie needs a change! She went poopie! She went poopie!”

Lucy replied, “It’s okay. I’ll get her all cleaned up. Come on Margaret, let’s go.” As she led her to the changing, Margaret waddled like a duck. A couple minutes later, Lucy returned Margaret over to the blocks area where she noticed Tonya crying. Lucy asked Tonya, “What’s the matter sweetheart?”

“I want my mommy,” she replied while sniffling from tears.

“Is there something I can get you or help you with?” Tonya inquired.

“No. I want my mommy!” Tonya responded in a louder, more assertive voice.

“Okay, I’ll get your mommy,” Lucy said as she motioned to one of the other caretakers. A couple minutes later, Christine entered the room and walked over to Tonya. Tonya slowly got up and grabbed Christine’s left leg.

Christine asked nicely, “What’s going on?”

“I need to go poopy,” she responded.

“Okay sweet pea, I can help you. Do you have the pull-up I gave to the receptionist?” Christine asked Lucy. Lucy led her and Tonya over to the changing table and grabbed it out of the cubby marked #6. Christine was a little uncomfortable changing her daughter in to a pull-up in the open in front of so many strangers, but quickly remembered that all of these kids had some kind of potty issues according to their mothers. She started by pulling off Tonya’s panties, but noticed quickly that they were rather damp. Realizing her urgency, she quickly resumed her attention to the task at hand and opened up the pink pull-up. Tonya carefully stepped into the pull up one leg at a time. To Christine’s utter shock, Tonya almost immediately started pushing and grunting. This was totally uncharacteristic of Tonya; she always ran off before using her pull-up. A few moments later, she began crying again. Christine asked Tonya, “Why are you crying, baby?”

“I went pee pee in my pull-up!” Tonya whimpered.

“It’s okay. It happens.” Christine said as she patted her back. She then realized her dress was very wet and her pull-up was leaking mess.

Lucy stepped in and said, “I can help get her cleaned up. Do you have an extra set of clothes?”

“Not with me. Maybe in the car, but I’m not sure.” Christine lamented.

“Well, we have the class uniforms right here.” Lucy said pointing to a cubby on one of the changing tables, adjacent to the one filled with diapers labeled, “SIZE 7”. Christine was still emotionally torn, but succumbed to the reality of her situation. She grudgingly nodded her head. Lucy leaned over to her and whispered, “Just tell Tonya that everything is going to be okay and ask her if Lucy can help her get cleaned up. I’ll take care of the rest. Head on back to the presentation.” Christine followed her instruction to the letter, and Tonya willingly allowed Lucy to pick her up and place her on the changing table. Christine quickly walked away when she saw Lucy make Tonya smile again by telling her a funny kid joke. Christine quietly reentered the conference room as Monica began introducing the second and final parent video testimonial.

“This next video is from Sheila, John’s mom,” Monica said. She started the video in the dimly lit room. The video showed a thin, elegantly dressed woman with long blond hair pulled back to a bun looking in to the camera. She began addressing the camera,

Hello. My name is Sheila and I’m Bri...I’m John’s mom. I have to remember to say John! Anyway, when I first heard about the Accelerated Early Learning Program from the director of my daycare, I was deeply interested. You see, I’m a working mom, and I wanted to make sure...uh...John would get a quality, full day learning experience at pre-school. Also, with his occasional accidents, I needed a place that would be accommodating.

Going in to the pre-interview with Monica, I didn’t know that much, or at least I didn’t realize I didn’t know all the ins and outs of the program. We discussed mainly the Sprint Curriculum and they told me that his occasional accidents wouldn’t be a problem. I probably would have never come to the pre-interview if I heard about transition prior to seeing the facility, meeting Monica, and learning about all the research leading up to the program’s development.

I was in shock when I first heard about the class uniform, transition, and regression, as probably most of you were when you first learned about it. I mean, how does regression accelerate learning? What would my parents and friends think if they saw John in diapers again? Is this good for John? I know the other parents shared in my same fears, but in the end, I realized that this jump start in to learning was great for John, and my other fears and embarrassments weren’t nearly as important.

After parent’s orientation, I met with Monica privately to develop our transition plan. I had never heard of the word inculcate, but I learned it the hard way. John was initially really resistant to the idea. During his orientation day, he cried when he heard that he would be wearing diapers again. I didn’t want to force this on him, nor was that recommended in the plan. I made matters worse by not having a conversation with him prior to his orientation. I needed help. Monica came to my house the next day in the evening and we talked to John together. She helped me explain to him that going back to diapers was going to be fun for him. He wouldn’t have to worry about accidents anymore, and every time he got changed, he would earn stars that would lead to rewards like toys and yummy snacks. And, all the other kids in class would be wearing diapers too.

To help motivate him, we bought some toys to reward his transition. I took the rest of the week off from work, and we took baby steps, no pun intended. First day, he got a big reward for letting me put the diaper on him and for keeping it on for the rest of the day. On the second day, I gave him a reward for sitting on the toilet with his diaper on and using it for pee. On the third day, put his old plastic potty in front of the TV and had him wear a diaper all day. I also gave him plenty of fluids, and some snacks high in fiber. He quickly realized that he no longer had to miss his cartoons anymore for potty breaks. On the fourth day, I removed the potty and he was willingly using his diaper without any reminders. The following week, when we went to class, all of the other kids were already there and were in the class uniforms. He was changed in to his without any resistance at all.

Almost immediately, I noticed that his behavior start to change. He was much happier and cheerful. He was also much calmer, and his angry tantrums practically stopped. He also regressed in some other ways. When I picked him up on the second day of class, he asked if I could buy him a binkie. He wanted to snuggle and be held more often. He also become very fond of taking his pants off. My initial fears began to creep back, until a couple weeks in, he was writing his name, very legibly, and was singing a song that named all the presidents, in order. The speed of his learning was incredible.

On the downside, for the first four months, I felt like I was constantly under attack. My mother-in-law, best friend, and sister all thought that it was scandalous that my four and half year old son was back in diapers. My sister had the gall to even recommend I see a psychiatrist. Slowly but surely, they all came around when they got to see John shine and read a little about the program. Strangers on the other hand were always quick to judge. I became a real expert on concealing his diaper under clothes, but occasionally someone would notice his diaper peeking out or the unmistakable smell of a dirty diaper would hit their nose in line at a store and wham...here comes the lecture. I’m a little ashamed to admit that in the beginning, I would sometimes say he had a disability and that would shut them up quick, but when I said that to someone who had a disabled child, I felt awful and stopped. My best advice is if someone gets very nosy, just tell them that it’s none of their business.

I know it’s shocking to think that a healthy five or six year old child would be encouraged to stay in diapers. It was a burden to me and family...trust me, I had to change those diapers 16 hours a day, but it wasn’t a burden to John. He was extremely happy attending the program, learned more than what I thought possible, and in the end, was able to ditch the diapers, go to a normal classroom setting, and thrive. His advanced learning traits continue; he’s a total sponge at school. My advice to you is to take this opportunity, make the sacrifice, and let your child reap the rewards.

As the video ended, Monica turned on the lights and asked if there were any questions. One of the mother’s asked, “When do we meet to come up with a transition plan?”

“Before you pick up your kids, you can schedule a meeting with me over the next week. We prefer in person discussion, and can be flexible to meet in the evening. Class will begin in three weeks, August 21. We will cover financials too, but know that this program is heavily subsidized by our research grants and some notable charitable donations. Scholarships are also available for anyone in need,” Monica said.

Julia felt energized. Anna was still nervous on how her husband would react. Christine’s early skepticism was replaced with inspiration. The orientation adjourned, and the mother’s lined up to pick up their kids. When Christine made it to the front, she was surprised to see Tonya wearing a blue t-shirt and pink jogging pants. She asked Lucy, “I thought you were going to put Tonya in to a diaper.”

“No, I wouldn’t have done that unless you instructed us to do so and it was already part of her normal routine. You need to have your meeting with Monica first, work out a transition plan, and talk to Tonya first. Tonya needs to make that decision with you,” Lucy said.

Christine smiled and was impressed by the careful consideration made towards Tonya’s feelings. It reassured her that there was a greater purpose at play, and that if she were to continue on this journey, she should heed the advice of the program.

Three days later, Julia returned to the building for her scheduled meeting with Monica. Lucy was caring for Sophia that morning. When she entered suite 320, she checked in with the receptionist and took a seat in the waiting area. Sitting across from her was one of the other mothers from orientation. She was very fair and had red wavy hair and freckles. Julia spoke up and said, “Hi there. I remember seeing you in orientation.”

“Oh hi. My name is Faith,” she said.

“My name is Julia. What time is your appointment with Monica?” Julia asked.

“10:00” Faith replied.

“Hmmm. My appointment is for 10:00 too,” Julia said as she double checked the email on her cell phone. She stood up and walked over to the receptionist and asked, “It looks like Monica got double booked. We both have 10:00 appointments.”

“Oh yes. Monica wanted to meet with you both together,” the receptionist replied.

Julia was surprised, but then thought there must be a reason. She went back to her seat in the waiting area and decided to try to get to know Faith. She began by asking, “So how did you hear about the program?”

“A friend of mine who works at my son’s daycare referred me to the website. She heard about it from a job listing,” Faith said. “How about you?”

“My nanny, she’s friends with Monica. She went to school with Monica at OPU when Monica was still teaching, before she began the academy. I helped get her Dallas chapter started,” Julia said, beaming with pride.

“That’s great. We’re lucky to have it here. I was worried that I wouldn’t find a pre-K program that would be a good fit for Caleb. He’s such a sensitive, sweet boy that has struggled to hit those milestones.” Faith said.

“He sounds like my Sophia,” Julia said. She was interrupted from continuing her discussion by Monica who called them both back to her office.

Upon entering Monica’s office, Monica sat down behind her desk, and said, “Thank you for coming. I apologize for not telling you in advance that I wanted to see you both together first. Based on your applications and pre-interviews, your kids are the most likely to have an easier transition to class. I also think you both would make excellent parent leaders for our parents forum. You both are confident and can help other parents who will have more difficulty in transition and regression. Don’t get me wrong, the staff and I will do most of the coaching, but sometimes it helps to get a fellow parents perspective. What do you say?”

“Sure, I’m in,” Faith said.

“Absolutely,” Julia followed.

“Great, I knew I could count on you both. Now lets get down to business. Would you like to discuss your transition plans separately or together? Should only take about five minutes,” Monica said as she looked at Julia first.

Julia looked at Faith and then back to Monica. She thought the transition would be more personal, but didn’t want to appear rude to Faith. She turned back to Faith and said, “I’m fine with it if you are.”

“Sure, I’m an open book,” Faith said confidently.

“Okay. Let’s get started. Caleb is 4 years 6 months old and isn’t potty trained at all, correct?” Monica said as she reviewed a file folder with notes and forms.

“Yes.” Faith replied.

“Why do you think he hasn’t trained yet?” Monica asked.

“He just hasn’t shown all the readiness signs. My husband and I are believers in child-led learning. I didn’t want to rush him or make it traumatic.” Faith said.

“What about Sophia? It looks like she’s 4 years 2 months old. Why hasn’t she trained yet?” Monica asked Julia.

“Very similar. We tried sitting her on her potty a couple times, but she’s been disinterested. She doesn’t seem to mind ever being in a wet diaper. She’ll usually ask about getting her messy diapers changed, but not always.” Julia said.

“Do either show any other signs of infantile behavior?” Monica asked.

“Caleb will sometimes still suck his thumb.” Faith said.

“Does he use a pacifier or a bottle?” Monica asked.

“No pacifier since he was 2. He never used a bottle. I did breastfeed him until he was 3.” Faith said.

“Sophia usually has a bottle every morning. I took the pacifier away last year at the advice of our dentist.” Julia said.

“Where do they sleep?” Monica asked.

“Caleb co-sleeps in my bed still. He has a big boy bed but he’s scared to be alone in his room.” Faith said.

“Sophia sleeps in her crib, but we’ve recently removed one of the sides.” Julia said as Monica finished taking notes and closed both files.

Monica said, “So here’s the plan. We want to trigger some regression; that’s key. First, you need to tell that there will be no more potty talk, and that they can stay in diapers as long as they like. If you have a potty chair, potty seat, or underwear, you want to throw them in the garbage in front of them. Make it a celebration. A day or two prior to kids orientation, you’ll want to escalate the babying. Since they are already in diapers, you’ll need to take other measures. Offer Caleb and Sophia a pacifier. In your packets, I recommend some that aren’t as damaging to their teeth. Dress them in a more babyish way. Let them play in the house in just their diapers. Carry them in your arms. If you still have a high chair, have them eat their meals in there. If they resist at all, offer them rewards like snacks or toys. If they flat out refuse, don’t push it, but wait a couple days and offer again. We’ll take care of the rest in class. Any questions?”

Both Julia and Faith shook their heads no. Monica handed each of them the tuition requirements and formal applications and said, “Take these in to the waiting room, review it and come back in if you have any questions. If you’re committed to moving forward, complete them today or by Monday at the latest.”

Julia and Faith both completed their applications and paid their tuitions in full for the year. They exchanged contact information and proceeded their separate ways. When Julia reached her car, she paused and wrestled with her doubts in her mind. She pulled herself together knowing as benefactor and now parent leader, she needs to be strong for others like Christine. Kids orientation would being in two weeks. She said to herself out loud, “I can do this. I can do this.”

Content: Chapter 10

On orientation day, Julia was asked to come 45 minutes early with Sophia to class. When she pulled her SUV in to the parking lot, she noticed that the business complex’s sign now had “Accelerated Early Learning Program” amongst the other 8 businesses listed on the marquee. After parking, Julia got out of the car and opened the the rear passenger door. Sophia had unbuckled herself and leapt from the car with enthusiasm still holding her empty morning bottle. She was so excited about her new school. Sophia was dressed in her Sunday best pink dress. She had begged her mommy to wear it to School and Julia didn’t see the harm. Her long blond hair was curled in to two pig tails tied with pink ribbon. Prior to grabbing her mommy’s hand, she twirled three times, as she liked how it made her dress balloon up.

When they got out of the elevator, Sophia and Julia immediately noticed balloons taped to the wall leading to the door. The door had a new sign above the suite number with “Accelerated Early Learning Program” printed on it in loud primary colors. Upon walking in, Julia was greeted by Faith. Caleb was sitting in the waiting area looking at a picture book. He was dressed in a very babyish blue short-all with a yellow undershirt sucking on a pacifier.

Faith looked a Sophia and commented, “You must be Sophia. What a beautiful dress you have. You look like a baby princess.” Sophia smiled and reveled in the compliment. She twirled to show off her dress.

Minutes later, Monica welcomed Julia, Faith and the kids back to the playroom. She said as she walked, “So at today’s orientation, I have a favor to ask you both. I need Sophia and Caleb to be in class uniform. As you know, today is the chance for kids to get a detailed walk through of the ins and outs of class and a chance for us to set expectations for their first day. Normally, I would have a couple of our upperclassmen kindergartners come in to exemplify the class attire, but since this is a new chapter, I don’t have any locally.” Monica turned to the kids, “Since both these special people already wear diapers every day like they should, I don’t think they will mind wearing their special school uniforms.”

“Yeah!” Sophia exclaimed. Caleb didn’t respond and was still shyly hanging on to Faith’s leg.

“Great. When we start orientation, Miss Jackie and Miss Amanda here will call you both up to come to the changing table, and I want you both to run up to them as fast as you can so we can get your clothes changed. If you can do that with a big smile on your faces, I will give Caleb a go-gurt and Sophia a box of raisins.”

Caleb and Sophia smiled and shook their head yes. Monica knew from their applications each kid’s favorite snack foods.

“Do you kiddos have any questions?” Monica asked.

“Can I have go-gurt now?” Caleb said with his pacifier still in his mouth.

“Soon, buddy. Just make sure you run up when we call you and smile.” Monica said.

About 10 minutes later, other moms and kids started to arrive. People congregated in the middle of the room on a large, circular, red carpet. In total, nine kids and moms made it to orientation. Many of the kids were being held by their moms to keep them from running and playing with the toys. The program started with Monica welcoming the kids and Miss Jackie and Miss Amanda introducing themselves. Both of them were dressed in bright red scrub tops adorned with Disney characters. Miss Jackie, pointing to her uniform, said, “This is my uniform for school. I change in to my uniform here every day. It has all my favorite characters,” she said as she pointed to Goofy. “Would you all like to see how you how you’ll change in to your class uniforms?”

A number of the kids responded with a yes. Miss Jackie and and Miss Amanda motioned the kids and parents over to the changing tables. Miss Jackie called out Sophia’s name and Miss Amanda called out Caleb’s. Both ran over to the tables with big smiles. Miss Jackie grabbed Sophia’s hand and said to all the kids, “So, every morning when you come in, wait here for an adult and never climb the stairs by yourself.” She turned to Sophia and said, “Can you reach for the sky?” Sophia put her hands straight in the air. Miss Jackie unbuttoned the top of the pink dress and unzipped the back. She carefully guided both arms out of the dress and pulled it down to the ground. After stepping out of the dress, Miss Jackie placed it carefully into a bin marked Sophia.

At the same time, Caleb was also being undressed. Sophia, wearing now only her diaper, socks, and shoes, was lifted on to the changing table and made to lay flat on her back. Her shoes were unbuckled and removed as well as her socks. Miss Jackie said as she placed them in to the bin, “Everyone will have their own bin clearly marked with their name.” Miss Jackie then put on a pair of disposable gloves and proceeded to unfasten Sophia’s slightly wet disposable diaper. She pulled it off and tossed it in the waste bin adjacent to the table. She lifted her legs and proceeded to wipe her down. Miss Jackie then grabbed a diaper from the cubby marked “SIZE 6”, unfolded it, and placed it under Sophia.

Caleb was no longer smiling as his wet diaper was removed. He was embarrassed that Jeremy would again see that he still wears diapers. Noticing some redness, Miss Amanda applied some lotion to his diaper area.

After their new disposable diapers were securely fastened, their brand new blue shirts, also covered in Disney characters, were pulled over their heads. The shirts fit short, ending just over the top edge of their diapers. Their bare feet were dressed in blue and pink crocs. Miss Jackie addressed the group as she placed Sophia back on to the floor, “Don’t they look awesome in their class uniforms?” Most of the kids nodded in agreement. “Everyone will get to wear the same uniform every day. Now, since Sophia and Caleb were so brave to get changed in front of everyone this morning, we’re going to reward them with four stars each,” she said as she walked to the wall adjacent to the changing tables on the left. There on the wall was a giant dry erase board sectioned off with thin blue tape. In each section was a name of a child along with a picture of their smiling face taken at parent’s orientation weeks earlier. Miss Jackie reached in to her scrub top pocket and pulled out a paper roll with golden star stickers. She stuck four stars in both Sophia and Caleb’s sections. Miss Jackie then was handed a little red box of raisins and proceeded to give them to Sophia while saying, “Since Sophia earned four stars, she now gets her favorite treat, raisins.” She then was handed an open tube of go-gurt and said, “Caleb has four stars too. He gets his favorite treat...a go-gurt.”

Caleb and Sophia smiled as they ate their treats. The other kids we’re soaking it all up. Julia noticed out of the corner of her eye that Christine was wiping away a tear. As Miss Amanda began to explain the Sprint Curriculum and bell system to the kids, Julia walked over to Christine, put her hand on her shoulder and whispered, “What’s wrong?”

Christine turned to Julia. Her mascara was running a bit on her right eye. She said, “I don’t know if I can go through with this. Jerry was furious. Maybe he’s right. Maybe this could do more harm than good.”

“You can’t think that way. Did Jerry look at the website?” Julia asked.

“He did. For about three minutes. Tonya didn’t even want to wear a diaper this morning,” Christine said.

“Did you offer her a reward?” Julia asked.

“Reward? You mean bribe. I don’t want to motivate her with bribes all the time,” Christine lamented.

“It’s not a bribe. Jerry and Jack get rewards for doing their jobs well. Kids or adults, we’re all reward motivated. You need to give Monica’s recommendations a chance,” Julia said.

“How did you get Jack to go along with it?” Christine asked.

“Less is more. I told that there was University sponsored research behind it all and it would be good for Sophia. I speak about it confidently. When Jerry realizes your fully behind it, he’ll get behind you,” Monica said.

The discussion on the curriculum ended, and the group now walked back to continue touring the facilities. First stop was the dining room. There were four small kid size tables, each with four plastic kid size chairs. In the corner were six wooden high chairs stacked in two stacks with plastic trays laying detached on the floor. Miss Jackie then asked, “By a show of parents hands, who uses or plans to use a high chair at home?”

Julia, Faith and one other mother raised their hands. Miss Jackie made a note on her clipboard and talked about nutrition. “If you decide later to start using a high chair, please let us know,” Julia said. She the pointed at the water machine on the wall and said, “We want you kiddos to drink lots of water. So, every time you bring your empty sippie cup or bottle to one of us to get filled, you will earn one star.”

The group proceeded back to the hallway and visited the first aid room and then to the discovery room. The discovery room had two fish tanks, a gerbil, rabbit, five large book shelves, and a slew of musical instruments including recorders, kazoos, and drums. There was even a couple of kids size bean bag chairs. The kids were really excited about the bunny and crowded around its cage. The next room was the computer room, fully equipped with tablets on tethers and touchscreen PC’s set on pint size tables.

One of the mothers raised her hand and asked as she pointed to a white cylinder hanging on the ceiling, “What is that?”

“That’s our loudspeaker system. There’s at least one in every room. It chimes in between sprints and is a white noise generator. It also can play music,” Miss Amanda said. She said, “Let’s head over to the nursery.”

Entering the nursery, the group was greeted to a dimly lit room that had a stack of bed mats and six cribs positioned in pairs against three walls with a changing table in between each pair. The cribs looked different than normal baby cribs; the rail heights were about two feet taller. There were also two glider rockers positioned in each corner. Miss Jackie clicked a button on the touchscreen panel on the wall near the door. The dim warm light faded in to a dim blue light and the sound of lullaby music began playing overhead. Miss Jackie then said, “We don’t have a specific nap time for everyone, but we do try to squeeze a nap in for each kiddo on their own schedule. The sprint chimes don’t ring in here to not disturb our little ones that are sleeping.”

Anna commented to Julia, “Margaret won’t take naps anymore. She absolutely refuses. I hope they have better luck than me convincing her.” Julia smiled and nodded.

Monica rejoined the group and escorted them back to the playroom. She gave them some last few tips and welcomed an applause for her special helpers, Sophia and Caleb. The two of them were dressed back in to their clothes by Miss Jackie and Miss Amanda. It was Friday and class would begin on Monday. Some of the moms chatted about their progress in transition. It helped Christine to hear she wasn’t the only one struggling. Faith gave her number to a couple mom’s for help and moral support.

Julia was again enamored with Faith’s confidence and poise. Her mind wandered back to Jack. She still hasn’t told him the full extent of the program, specifically that it would run through kindergarten and Sophia would need to stay in diapers that whole time. She thought to herself, “I need to tell him before Jerry does.” She decided to tell him that very night.

Around 4:00, Julia began preparing dinner. Jack’s flight was due to land soon, and she was trying to time the meal to be piping hot when he arrives home. Lucy walked in the kitchen and said, “Hey Mrs. O. What are you making?”

“Spinach lasagna, asparagus, and I picked up a lemon tart from the bakery,” Julia said. She then asked, “Will you be joining us tonight?”

“No. I’m going out with Jackie from the program and my friend Crystal. We’re grabbing a bite and going to go a dance club afterwards,” Lucy said.

“Well that sounds like fun. Where’s Sophia?” Julia asked.

“She’s taking a nap. I just set her down, so with any luck, she’ll still be asleep by the time I leave. Thanks again for letting me split my time over at the program. This part-time research assistant job will give me some good experience on my resume.” Lucy said.

“It’s my pleasure. I have to admit, I don’t know yet how I’m going to use all this new free time. Maybe I’ll take up gardening,” Julia said while laughing. She’s never been good at caring for plants. She asked, “Do me a favor. Before you go, can you help me by assembling that high chair in the corner?”

“What happened to the old one?” Lucy asked.

“I had someone haul it to Goodwill last year. It was cluttering the garage. Had I known...” Julia said.

“Sure, no problem,” Lucy said. Lucy assembled the high chair and went upstairs to her bathroom to get ready for the evening.

After an hour, Julia heard Sophia fussing on the baby monitor. She went upstairs to her bedroom and pulled her out of the crib. Patting her bottom, she could easily tell that her diaper was wet. Julia laid her on the changing table and unsnapped her romper bottom to access her diaper. After a couple minutes, her new diaper was on and her romper snaps were refastened. Julia grabbed her off the table and slung her over her hip. Sophia said, “Down, mamma.”

“Let me carry you downstairs. Daddy will be home soon and then we’ll have dinner,” Julia said as she walked with her out of the room. It was awkward carrying her like that again. Sophia was a normal sized four year old and Julia was unaccustomed to the load. She repositioned her to her front before she began to walk down the stairs.

Julia entered the kitchen and slipped Sophia into the high chair. As she began buckling her in to the chair, Sophia said, “I don’t sit in a baby chair no more. Get me out.”

“I got this chair especially for you. If you sit in it everyday like a good baby girl for a month, I will get you a puppy,” Julia replied.

“A puppy! Oh yes, yes, yes. I want a puppy!” Sophia said enthusiastically. Julia latched the white tray to the high chair. She then grabbed a graham cracker from the cabinet above the stove and placed it on Sophia’s tray along with a sippie cup containing water poured earlier. Sophia smiled and began eating the cracker and smiled at her mommy.

Minutes later, Jack entered the house from the garage. He was wearing a gray suit and blue shirt with a tie hanging loosely below his unbuttoned collar. He walked in to the kitchen and kissed Julia on the cheek without saying a word. He then opened the fridge and pulled out a half full bottle of red wine and poured himself a glass.

“Hi daddy!” Sophia said as he put the cork back in to the bottle.

“I didn’t see you there lil’ girl. Why are you in a high chair?” Jack asked.

Julia stepped in and said, “I need to talk to you privately before dinner. Can you walk with me over to the dining room?” Julia gave Sophia another graham cracker before escorting Jack over to the dining room. They entered the dining room and Julia proceeded to sit at the end of the table. Her tablet computer was sitting there on the table.

Jack sat in the chair adjacent and asked, “Okay. So what’s going on?”

“Sophia had orientation today over at the Accelerated Early Learning Program. Jerry’s wife Christine is enrolled too, along with eight other kids. I never got a chance to give you all the details of the program,” Julia said.

“It’s a pre-kindergarten program, not college. I’ve had a long week, and I’m starving. Do we need to go through this now?” Jack said in an angry tone.

“Yes. This program requires some family sacrifices, and I need you to be on the same page with me,” Julia said.

“What do you mean by sacrifices?” Jack asked.

“Well, the program is based on this scientific theory that kids with regressive behavior can be focused to learn faster. We will have to facilitate that regression with Sophia for the next two years,” Julia said.

“What the hell does that mean?” Jack demanded.

“Well, Jack, why don’t you watch these three videos here and find out while I go bring dinner out,” Julia said as she pointed to the program’s webpage on her tablet. Jack moved the tablet closer and started the introduction video. Julia left to go pull the lasagna from the oven and set the kitchen table.

After about ten minutes, Julia returned to the dining room just as Jack finished one of the parent testimonials. He sat back in his chair and faced the ceiling for a moment. He regained his composure and looked at Julia sternly. “I can’t believe what I just saw. Five and six year olds in... Even if I can believe that this program works, how are we going to explain this to our family, our friends, your mother?”

“For our closest friends and family, I can take the lead. We don’t need to tell them all tomorrow. In a few months, when Sophia is benefiting from the program, it will be easier,” Julia said.

“If she’s not benefiting from this in a few months, I’ll want to revisit this decision,” Jack said.

“So I have your full support?” Julia asked.

“You have my conditional support so long as this method works. And Jerry’s wife doesn’t flake out. And don’t expect me to change her diapers anymore!” Jack said.

“Ha! You haven’t changed a diaper in 6 months!” Julia said.

“Not true. I changed that one on Mother’s day,” Jack said as Julia leaned over to give him a kiss. The two returned to the kitchen to find Sophia still in her high chair with lasagna sauce splattered on both cheeks.

“More, please,” Sophia said smiling as she lifted her empty plate to her mommy.

“Yes, baby,” replied Julia.

Chapter 12

Monday morning soon arrived. Lucy left early that morning to help the team at AELP. Julia woke Sophia up at 7am and dressed her in a cute matching pink skort and top and fed her breakfast. She carried her downstairs, placed her in her high chair, and poured her a bowl of Raisin Bran cereal. Julia wanted to give her something with a lot of fiber as the program materials recommended, and thought it would appeal to Sophia due to the raisins.

After a couple spoonfuls of cereal, Sophia looked at Julia and said, “The cereal is delicious, mommy.” Julia smiled and proceeded to pour her a bottle with an equal mix of apple juice and prune juice. Sophia made a funny face after taking the first taste from the sippie cup, but after a few minutes, tried again and continued to drink it down.

Upon arriving to the building, Julia caught an elevator with another mom and child. On the way up, Julia turned to the mom and said, “Hi. I saw you at orientation. My name is Julia.”

The woman responded, “Hi. I’m Daphne and this is Marcus.” Marcus had his hand near his crotch and was obviously doing a potty dance. Daphne looked at her son and then back at Julia and said, “The transition hasn’t been very easy. Marcus will only use his diaper for number one while sitting in a potty chair. How’s your daughter doing?”

Julia replied, “Sophia is doing great. She wasn’t really potty trained before, so she has it a little easier.” Daphne nodded her head.

The elevator doors open and everyone proceeded to facility. Daphne approached the check in counter first and placed a large reusable shopping bag on the counter with a pack of pull-ups and collapsible potty chair inside. She leaned forward to speak to the person at the counter and said, “Checking in Marcus Palovski. I have some special instructions for him.” The check in person acknowledged and pushed a button on the counter.

A few moments later, Miss Jackie came through the playroom door behind the counter, spoke briefly to the check in girl, and then said to Daphne, “How can I help?”

Daphne replied, “Marcus here needs some special accommodations. I brought a bag of pull-ups for him. He won’t want to get put in a diaper. Also, can you please let him sit on a potty when he needs to go? He’ll let you know when.”

Miss Jackie took a deep breath and said, ”Okay. I can use pull-ups on him today, but starting tomorrow, he won’t be able to return to class without wearing diapers. Unfortunately, we can’t make exceptions. It’s required for proper inculcation.”

Daphne said, “But they are a kind of diaper. What difference does it make?”

Miss Jackie said, “It makes a big difference. Let me work with him today and see if I can warm him up to diapers. Most of the other kids will be wearing diapers, so he might just come around.”

“I suppose,” Daphne said sounding defeated.

Miss Jackie looked in the bag and pulled out the potty chair and handed it back to Daphne while saying, “We won’t be needing this. If your worried about little Marcus, why don’t you wait in the waiting room and watch from the window, or we can give you a call if he gets upset.”

“Alight. I’ll wait around until he goes potty,” Daphne said.

“You mean use his diapers...like he should, right?” Miss Jackie said while winking.

“Yes...use his....di....diapers,” Daphne said while looking at Marcus and running her fingers through his dark brown hair. She held back tears as she thought about the year and a half she spent getting him mostly potty trained.

Miss Jackie looked at Marcus with a big smile and said, “Are you ready to have some fun pal? I think I remember that you like play-doh.” Marcus smiled and nodded his head. Miss Jackie extended her hand and Marcus grabbed it and walked with her through the gap in the counter and through the door to the playroom.

Julia stepped up to the counter with Sophia, gave her name and signed in. The girl behind the counter pressed the button again and moments later, Miss Amanda came out of the playroom, looked at Sophia and said, “I remember this big helper. Are you ready to get in your class uniform again, little Sophia?”

Sophia smiled, grabbed Miss Amanda’s hand, and followed her in to the playroom. There were already two other children in the room in class uniform and Marcus was sitting at the play-doh table with Lucy still dressed in his clothes from home. Lucy waived at Sophia from a distance and Sophia waived back as she approached the changing table. Miss Amanda said, “Reach for the sky, please.” Sophia quickly complied. Miss Amanda pulled off her pink shirt and placed it in Sophia’s bin. She then lifted Sophia up on to the changing table and proceeded to removed her pink shorts exposing her diaper. She then removed her little Velcro sneakers and pink socks.

Lucy arrived at the changing table with Marcus in her arms holding a blob of play-doh. Lucy then said to Sophia, “Sophia, can you say hello to Marcus and tell him how old you are?”

“Hello, Mar-gus, I am four years old.” Sophia said.

Marcus looked at Sophia on the changing table just wearing a diaper. He replied, “I am four too.”

Lucy then said, “Miss Amanda, what are you doing right now?”

“Well, I’m just about to change this big baby girl in to a new diaper. She has a wet diaper on right now. After we’re done, I’m going to reward her with a star for getting her wet diaper changed. When she gets four stars, she’ll get a reward,” Miss Amanda said. She then grabbed two disposable gloves and began to put them on.

Lucy gave them some privacy. She walked over to the adjacent changing table and asked Marcus, “Are you ready to get changed in to your class uniform and earn some stars for rewards?” Marcus looked at the two kids playing at the LEGO table wearing their blue shirts and diapers. He sheepishly nodded his head. Lucy called over Miss Jackie. Miss Jackie had him raise his hands and removed his striped shirt. His blue pull-up was now visible as it peaked just above his shorts. Marcus dropped his hand back to his crotch and with greater urgency, began to do a little dance. Miss Jackie pretended not to notice and lifted him on to the large changing table. She unbuttoned his shorts and gently removed them not wanting to preempt him to pee his pull-up. After removing his socks and shoes, she ripped both sides of his pull-up even though it was dry and clean and removed it. She grabbed a diaper from the size 5 bin and lifted his legs by the ankles.

As Miss Jackie was very quickly securing the diaper, Marcus softly said, “Pull-ups, not baby diapers.”

Miss Jackie finished diapering him, began putting on his shirt, and replied matter-of-factly, “I can only give you two stars if you wear this diaper.” Not waiting for his reply, she quickly put on his blue crocs and gently, but quickly, placed him on the floor. Miss Amanda walked Sophia over already dressed in her uniform.

Marcus resumed his potty dance, pulled on Miss Jackie’s pants, and asked, “Where’s the potty?”

Miss Jackie responded, “There’s no potties here silly. Everyone here uses their diapers when they need to go no matter where they are or what they are doing.”

Marcus said, “But, my ma...” He froze as he felt his control over his pee go.

After a moment, Sophia put two and two together and asked loudly, “Is he going pee-pee?”

Miss Amanda nodded her head. A chime rang over head and followed be a double chime. Both Lucy and Amanda headed toward check in. Another woman in a scrub with a badge labeled trainee ushered Sophia away from the changing tables.

Marcus looked at Miss Jackie and asked, “Change me?”

“Not yet,” Miss Jackie replied. “You don’t need to worry about when to get changed anymore. We can see your diaper, and we know when it’s time to change you. Your diaper isn’t that wet.” Miss Jackie wanted to make sure that Marcus got used to the wet feeling. It was a key part of transition. Marcus waddled back over to the play-doh table unaccustomed to a soggy diaper swinging between his legs. Once Marcus was settled, Miss Jackie returned to the check in area and reassured Daphne that Marcus was adjusted. She gave her back the bag with pull-ups, and Daphne slowly walked out.

Over the next thirty minutes, eight of the nine registered children had arrived. All were checked in and changed into their class uniforms without a fuss, except for Jeremy. He threw a tantrum around going in diapers, and the team was unsuccessful in their attempts to persuade him, so they reluctantly allowed him to wear his pull-ups with pants on. Absent was Christine.

Monica came in to the playroom at 8:30 sharp and called all the kids over to the red circle carpet near the white board tracking the kids’ stars. One of the trainees, Miss Janet, brought over a tray of baby bottles filled with diluted apple juice. Once all the kids were on the red carpet, she said, “Welcome everyone to the first day of class. I see many of you have already earned some stars for having your diapers changed. From now on, we will give one star for changing your wet diaper and two stars for changing your messy diapers. That means you can keep earning stars if you keep using your diapers. And, does anyone know what you get when you earn four stars?”

Four kids shouted answers and one kid, Margaret, raised her hand. Monica pointed at her ignoring the shouted answers of the others. Margaret said, “Um... You give raisins and go-gurts and treats and stuff.”

“That is correct. Very good job raising your hand, Maggie. For raising your hand, I will give you one more star,” Monica said as she put a second star by Margaret’s name. “Now you have two stars! You’re getting so close.”

“That’s not fair. I said that before her,” a little girl said in the back of the group as she crossed her arms.

“Erin, I have another way for you to earn a star. If you can finish a bottle of juice water, I will give you a star. That goes for everyone,” Monica said as she pointed over to Miss Janet’s tray of bottles. All the kids except for one little boy quickly ran up to Janet.

Miss Amanda approached the little boy and said, “Hey Rob, don’t you want to earn a star?”

“I don’t drink bottles. I use big boy cups,” Rob said.

“I can get you a sippie cup. Would that be okay?” Miss Amanda said. Rob agreed and went with Amanda to the drink station.

Meanwhile, Sophia was drinking her bottle fast when a rumble in her tummy coupled with a cramp distracted her. She took the bottle out of her mouth and looked panicked. She looked for a hidden spot and settled on a door over by the Nursery. As she tried to sneak off to the hallway, Lucy intercepted her. Lucy said, “Sweetie, you can’t come over here just yet. Stay near Monica and your classmates. We’ll let you over here later.” Another rumble in her tummy gave Lucy a clue to her purpose. Now knowing Sophia’s predicament, she led her by hand back to the group as they guzzled their juice water.

Marcus finished first and waived his bottle above his head. Janet collected his empty bottle and congratulated him on his earned star. She then asked him, “Would you like another bottle? You can earn another star, but don’t drink this one so fast or you’ll get a belly ache.” Marcus agreed and took the bottle.

Sophia was then suddenly hit with an especially strong cramp and lost the battle of holding it in. She crouched a bit as she filled her diaper with a large soft mess, no doubt due to the large quantity of bran and prune juice she had for breakfast. Most of the staff noticed as it happened, but purposely didn’t react. Two kids standing behind her, Sam and Caleb, both heard and saw her mess her diaper. They began to giggle. Sophia, feeling a little embarrassed, began to cry. Miss Jackie swooped in and escorted her to the changing table. She carefully laid her down on the table trying hard to not cause the very filled diaper to leak. After she put on her gloves, she carefully untaped her soiled diaper and cleaned her well with wipes. She applied a small amount of powder on Sophia just prior to fastening her new size 6 diaper. Miss Jackie ended the change by saying, “Well, we got you all cleaned up, and you’ll get two stars for having your messy diaper changed. Can I tell the other kids that you got two stars?” Sophia nodded as she wiped the remaining tears from her face while sniffling.

Miss Jackie carried Sophia back to the group and announced, “Sophia here just did something great. She made a big poo-poo in her diaper and let me change her diaper like a good girl. She gets TWO stars.” The other staff gave her a round of applause while Monica place two more stars by Sophia’s name.

Monica then explained again how the sprints work and what to do when the chime overhead sounded. Each child was given a number 1 through 3. Sophia was grouped with Marcus and Jeremy. The distinct chime sounded and the children looked for their corresponding sign being held up by one of the staff while stating their number. Miss Amanda was calling for Sophia’s group, group 1. Sophia and Marcus finished their bottles as they waited for the sprint to start. Miss Janet quickly came over, congratulated, and gave them new bottles. Sophia was given a rubber bracelet to wear indicated that she had a reward owed to her. Miss Amanda then happily informed them that they were about to have fun with finger paints.

Thirty minutes later, near the end of the sprint, Marcus wet his diaper again, but without so much as a peep about it. Moments later, Miss Amanda quietly walked behind him and gave his rear end a gentle squish. She called for another trainee, Mrs. Sarah to watch the finger painters as she tended to Marcus. Marcus was given his bracelet before he was changed and was beaming with pride. He did not fuss or resist as Miss Amanda expertly changed his extremely swollen diaper and placed him in a new one. When he returned, he compared his green bracelet with Sophia’s purple one both giggling in excitement for their reward. Miss Amanda instructed the kids to remove their smocks as she hung their pieces of art to dry.

Shortly there after, the chime rang and the kids ran to their next sprint. Before the sprint began, Miss Janet asked both Sophia and Marcus if they wanted to trade their bracelets for snacks as she held a box of raisins and a fruit roll up. Marcus quickly grabbed the fruit roll up. Sophia then complained, “I want a roll up too!” Janet reached in to her apron pockets and pull out another roll up and then collected their bracelets.

Jeremy approached Miss Janet and said, “I finished all my juice water. How many tickets do I have now?”

Janet looked at him, sighed, and said, “I can’t give you any stars if you aren’t in class uniform. I’m sorry.” Jeremy’s mouth dropped in disbelief.

As he watched Miss Janet approach group 2 to give out a reward, he ran up to Miss Amanda and said, “Okay. I’ll wear diapers.” Miss Amanda smiled.
