I’m suddenly aware that I’m lying in a bed, semi naked, its very bright and I need to get away and then I’m out.
I’m suddenly aware that I’m lying in a bed, semi naked, its very bright and a priest is talking to me. Then a policeman is talking to me. He asked me
“What happened” and I have no idea what he is talking about and then I’m out.
Over the next few days, I am drifting in and out of conscious, From the talking that I hear, I am able to work out that I am in hospital. My left arm is in plaster and my left leg is hung in the air in front of me and I feel wet.
The nurses fuss around me and change my bedding but half hour later and my bed is wet again.
I eventually figure out that if I place the pee bottle between my legs with my member in it, then my bed doesn’t get wet.
Oh god this is like being 11 again, when my bed wetting started. It was just after my dad died and I kept waking up in a wet bed. I dealt with it and after trying to use carrier bags and towels, so I put myself back in nappies and baby pants. I was a really little skinny kid anyway, so I was still able to get in baby nappies that I found in the airing cupboard and baby pants that I bought in the shop.
It didn’t stop me wetting in my bed, but it did stop my bed getting wet. I would just wash everything in a morning when I had my shower.
But that was 7 years ago, I’m now 18 and at college.
Over the next few days with daily visits from my mom, brother Simon and sister Sarah, I am able to piece together that I have had a motorcycle crash nearly a month ago and I have been in a coma. I have broken my arm and leg and smashed by head and abdomen up quite badly.
Nearly 3 months I was in hospital before I was let home. My leg still in plaster and using crutches but I was going home. I got dressed and was slowly able to get to moms car, took ½ hour for what should probably be a 10 minute walk, but I got there and I was exhausted. Unfortunately, I also felt wet. it was summer so I was wearing shorts as trousers would not go over my cast. We then drive home. Mom sees my issue and gets me clean pants and shorts and shoo’s everybody out of the lounge so I can change. ½ later and I am wet again.
Mom had found out about my issue from when I was younger when she had found my nappies drying on the radiator under my bath towel. She had helped me then by washing and drying my nappies for me and she still knew where they were.
Mom helped me get upstairs back to my bedroom, one step at a time shuffling my bottom up the stairs and into my room.
My mom went in the bottom of my closet and came back with my nappies and baby pants
“Just for now while we get this sorted” she said then removed my clothes, put my nappy and baby pants on me with my PJ top. I got into bed as she closes the curtains, even though it was only the middle of the afternoon, I was exhausted and I was out.
I was really skinny before going to hospital and I am even skinnier now. The clothes that I do have on just hang on me as they are all too big, apart from my nappies and baby pants which had been tight before but now fit me perfectly.
Yes, I had still being wearing my nappies before my accident out of habit or comfort but now out of necessity.
Mom woke me the following morning bringing me a cup of coffee into my room. She asked me if I wanted to get up to which I agreed. Mom helped me out of bed and I was able to stand but my nappy was obviously wet.
“We need to get you changed first” mom said
“OK but I need to go to the loo first” was my reply. Mom helped get my nappy and baby pants off over my cast but leaving me naked as I went to the next-door bathroom and did my deed and then returned.
Mom got me on the bed and pinned a couple of nappies on me then a clean pair of baby pants fed up over my cast and settled over my nappy.
“It’s for the best at the moment” mom said as she then helped me into my shorts.
A shuffle downstairs to see the family and all in a bit of a daze. At least I am able to get around a bit on my walking sticks. After a chat with mom, I persuade her to take me out somewhere in the car. I’ve been stuck inside for months, mom goes out the front door and down the 2 steps to the car to get the car ready and I try to follow her. I get out of the front door and down one step before I fall over with a crash. Hearing the clatter, mom rushes over and sees my arm is disfigured, I’ve broke my arm again. Mom does no more than scoop me up in her arms and place me in the car then back to the hospital.
In casualty I am checked and x-rayed, fortunately it is only my arm that is broken again as my leg is still protected. Whilst I was being examined, mom had been out to the car and was now carrying a carrier bag with her hand-bag.
My arm was put back in plaster and we were left alone in the cubicle so I could get dressed. Mom took this opportunity to see if my nappy needed changing. Moms are good at this. Whilst I had been in x-ray, mom had also been to the disability shop as I found out as she changed my nappy for me in the cubicle and this time had larger baby pants that fastened at the sides, much easier than feeding them over my cast.
Dressed but now in a wheelchair and we were going back home. At least I got my adventure out of the house, just not the adventure I wanted or expected. We stopped somewhere on the way home and I stayed in the car as mom went in and returned with a wheelchair that she had loaned for me.
Back home and we now have an issue, I can’t get upstairs with one arm and one leg in a cast. This is soon sorted as the furniture is moved around downstairs and my bed is brought down, mom undresses me and gets my PJ top on so I’m just in my top and a nappy. Sarah and Simon are still there and can see me but say nothing about what I am wearing. I get into bed and I’m out.
I wake up the following morning and I’m lying on side looking out the patio doors at the garden. I am sort of aware of a couple of moments of activity in the night but no detail comes to mind. Exploring my senses and feeling my nappy figure that I am dry and looking in the garden at the washing line, I am trying to work out what is out there drying. It only takes moments to realise that the white squares wafting in the breeze are nappies, my nappies. I would have hoped that mom would be discreet like she used to do for me and keep them hidden in the tumble dryer but no, here they were all lined up on the washing line in a regimented order and just the same as our neighbours who also had a line full of nappies, but they had a toddler. It’s subtle, but the nappies on our line are bigger than the nappies next door or maybe I am just over thinking it.
Mom appears, having seen me stir, she is there with my morning coffee.
“morning Gary, we weren’t sure you were ever going to wake up. I had to change your nappy last night and again this morning and you barely moved a muscle. It’s another nice day so I’m trying to stay ahead and got your things washed.
So that set the tone for the next 2 months, I’m back in nappies 24/7 and with great difficulty and a lot of help, I am able to get out of the house and into the car but then I am in a wheelchair whenever we get to where we are going.
12 months later and I am back on my feet. I have now passed my car test and got a Mini as mom does not want me on bikes anymore. Still in nappies but now using child size disposables in my terry nappy as they are really absorbent and a little bit slimmer than double terry nappies.
Me and mom have gone out and I’m wearing my new skinny stretch jeans. Being stretch means I can be a bit more mobile without the restrictions of thick denim. We are looking round a housing showroom attached to a garden centre. I know I have already wet and know that I am wetting again as I have got a lot of feelings and some control back, I’m just not quick enough yet to get to the toilets in time but I am practicing.
We are walking around and I stop to look at a large floor standing mirror and see the reflection of a mom and her toddler daughter who looked about 3. Quite obviously still in a nappy by the way her skinny trouser clung to her. Now seeing my own reflection, my skinny stretch jeans had settled around my mid-section and my nappy had swelled up, quite considerably! My nappy was as clearly on display as hers front and back.
Mom came up behind me
“I think someone needs their nappy changing” she whispered in my ear.
Disabled and baby change is one room here and that is where we went. Fortunately, it’s a solid counter in there rather than the typical drop down wall mounted tray. Mom got me to jump on the counter and had me changed and down in a minute using the spare disposable that she had in her handbag. Much easier and quicker than doing it with me standing. Somebody is trying to get in before we got out, used nappy in the disposal bin and hands washed. It’s the mom and little girl I had seen early and she gave us a right dirty look as we walked out. Obviously my nappy not as obvious to everybody as I thought it was.
Yes its awkward and embarrassing but alive and walking. even if it is in a nappy, is better than the alternative.
