Content: 1Despite being six years old, Alice still wets herself. My wife and I are working hard to make her stop and, to avoid finding her without underwear and pants to wear, we have imposed that she wear a diaper and tell us when she has an accident.

Alice did not protest; in fact, she was happy with our idea to the point that she pulled down both her pants and underwear because she couldn't wait for us to put one on her. (Luckily, we were in the bathroom and my wife had brought a pack of pull-ups with her.)

While I was setting up the new changing table in the bathroom, Alice approached me and tugged on my shirt to get my attention. She was looking down, and on her little face, there was only shame and humiliation. I knew she had had an accident, but I preferred that she tell me explicitly.

"What's that sad little face?" I asked, lifting her chin.

"I… I wet myself," she admitted regretfully. "My underwear told me, and I didn't listen."

"I'm sorry, little monkey," I said, giving her a hug. "I'll finish setting up the changing table and then give you a good cleanup. In the meantime, would you do me the favor of trying to go in the potty?"

Alice looked at me puzzled and then did as she was told.

A few moments later, I laid her down on the newly set-up changing table. I pretended to have trouble tearing the tabs on the left side of the pink pull-up to cheer her up. Of course, she giggled amusedly, and I let her tear the other side. She exclaimed happily, "Daddy, I'm as strong as Superman!"

I grabbed a wet wipe, gently wiped her private parts, and removed the wet diaper from under her bottom. After taking a clean pull-up, I slipped it between her legs up to her knees and rubbed the tips of my fingers with moisturizing cream to prevent irritation.

"Daddy, what are you doing?" she suddenly asked.

"I'm putting cream on you. Both in the front and in the back."

"Why?"

"So the bad germs won't hurt you."

"Shouldn't you put it on me everywhere?" she then asked. "Germs are small and are everywhere!"

I held back a little laugh. I said, pretending to be an intellectual, "Our whole body has a shield to defend itself from them; but in the areas where we pee and poop, this shield needs a hand." You have the right to criticize my answer; I'm not exactly an expert in science and biology.

"But you don't put it on Tyler!" she suddenly retorted angrily. "Is it because he has a penis?"

I burst out laughing heartily. "No, little monkey. We put it on him too. Even though he pees differently than you, he still needs the cream."

"Then, why don't I have one?"

"What?"

"A penis."

To date, this change has been the funniest ever. From a normal curiosity to wanting to be a boy like her older brother. I should have scolded her for saying that word, but it would have been useless. After all, she was a curious little girl and would have taken little time to discover their real function.

2I was helping Tyler with his literature homework when he asked me this question: "Dad, why do you let me wear diapers again?"

I looked up from the book, surprised and confused. Unintentionally, I made a face of disgust, forgetting that the return to diapers was recent and my wife and I needed to get used to it again. I asked him to repeat, I admit that part of me wanted to tell him to focus on his homework.

He put down his pen. "I'm twelve years old and I shouldn't be wetting and soiling myself. So why am I wearing a diaper?"

And here comes the moment of explanation, the thing I hate most in my entire parenting life. "Ty, I know it might seem like a big contradiction to you, but you've seen for yourself that the diaper is… it's doing you good. You're no longer nervous and angry; you don't scream in front of the TV anymore; plus, you've started reading books! Something you hadn't done since third grade!"

He gave me a puzzled look, then nodded. "You're right, Dad. But I feel… like a retard."I panicked. It was the first time his words had pierced my heart.

"You are perfect, Tyler," I reassured him as best I could. "We put it on you to make you stress less. You're not retarded, you're just… a kid who's concerned about his mental health. Usually, it's an adult thing, but it's something that affects kids like you too."

A big smile spread across his face. "I have a book in my room about mental health. Could you read it to me tonight before bed?"

"Of course," I said, relieved and happy. "Now finish your homework. By the way, did you pee?"

He shook his head. "No. Can I go?"

I furrowed my brow. What a stupid question was that?

"If you need to go, go!" I scolded him. "Holding in your pee is not good for your body!"

Shortly after, I took him to the bathroom to change him. I put him on the changing table and noticed his red cheeks. "What's wrong?"

He let himself go on the table and started staring at the ceiling. "It's… it's the first time you're changing my diaper," he stammered, whimpering. "D-Do you think it's weird…"

Immediately, I picked him up and cuddled him like a baby. My little Tyler… All this must be hard for him: school, having to grow up and… diapers. I felt like a failure, a nothing. Seeing him cry was a rare thing.

Whispering sweet words to him, I laid him down on the changing table and started rolling up my sleeves. The whole time, Tyler sobbed, repeating one word: "Sorry."
After fastening the new diaper around his waist, I put him down and knelt to his level. Calm and peaceful eyes fixed on his red and shiny ones. I wanted to make sure he was okay.

"Do you feel better now?"

He nodded.

"I don't think you're weird. I don't think that and I never will. And that's also why your mother and I allowed you to wear them: to make you feel good about yourself. When you don't feel good, you have to tell us. Understood?"

He nodded again. "Dad?"

"Yes, bud?"

"Can you hold me? I want to be with you for a while."

I granted his wish without thinking and whispered in his ear: "As long as you want, son."

"Thanks, Dad. You're my hero."

3Halloween is the holiday I’ve never been able to stand. I hate those decorations that pretend to be scary, not to mention that you have to be home to give candy to kids you don’t even know and won’t see again until October 31st of the following year. I wonder how many sweets get thrown away at the end of every Halloween.
Now I’m a father, so I have to go along with Alice and Tyler’s wish to go trick-or-treating. This is the first time they’ll go with diapers under their costumes and clothes.

I was discussing it with Janette while changing Alice in the bathroom.

“Do you really want to put it on her? Both of them?” I asked, stunned. “Can’t we just leave them at home and celebrate it in the living room, playing some board game or something?”

Janette lifted Alice’s legs, removed the dirty diaper, and put a clean one on her. “They want to do it. Besides, they’ll be with their friends. So we’ll have time to be together.”

“Jan, I remind you that you’re putting a diaper on our daughter. If she and Tyler have an accident in front of their friends, what do you think will happen?”

Janette sighed in annoyance. Why was she acting like this? I was concerned about the social lives of our kids, and she was ignoring its importance. Never mind our shared educational approach; we were talking about our children's well-being!

She finished securing Alice’s diaper and turned to me, giving me a stern look. “If you ever listened to me, you’d know that our kids will only be accompanied by Dana— Ty’s best friend — and Matilda — Alice’s best friend. Also, you and Arnold will follow them until they get tired. See? Problem solved!”

I stayed silent, confused. Maybe she was right: I hadn’t paid attention and had just made myself look like an idiot. I brought my hands to my face, resigned, and rubbed my eyes. “Do you really want to let them go out?”

“Dad, please!” Alice’s little voice caught both our attention as she sat with her hands clasped, as if pleading. “We’ll be good! I promise!”

Yes, in the end, I had to take the kids around the neighborhood. I was once again bribed by her sweet, innocent puppy eyes!

Before going out, Alice, Tyler, and Dana asked us to sit in the living room with our eyes closed. I guessed they wanted to show us their costumes, and so they did:
Alice was dressed as a little countess with fangs covered in blood; Tyler and Dana as two brave knights armed with wooden swords. On their chests, they wore a caricature of a black lion on two legs with a crown on its mane against a blue and white background.

“You look beautiful!” Janette put a hand over her big smile. “A countess protected by two knights. Mmh... you’ve given me an idea for a story.”

They looked cute, especially Tyler. His cheeks were flushed, and he avoided Dana’s curious, innocent gazes. If he had the courage, he would have held her hand.

“You make quite an unusual trio, unique and fantastic,” I admitted, managing a warm smile.

Alice and Dana thanked us. Tyler just smiled awkwardly and nodded. It was the embarrassment talking for him.

The evening was an unprecedented success. The kids filled their plastic pumpkins to the brim, making us win a few rounds at the dentist. The adults in the neighborhood were surprised to see such a unique quartet, probably not used to seeing a vampire countess and a female knight. There’s a first time for everything, right?

Speaking of diapers, both my kids wet them without realizing it and without dirtying their costumes and clothes. Janette and I had to perform acrobatics to change them and clean them up. Unintentionally, Tyler peed on me like a newborn!

I confessed to Janette later that it had been a good idea to have them wear them. At least for Alice, since her costume was mostly made up of her regular clothes. I won’t hide that I felt like a real fool for doubting her idea.

“But tell me,” she suddenly changed the subject with a curious tone, “how did Tyler behave with Dana?”

“He’s smitten with her.” I kissed her soft, thin lips. “He told me he peed himself when he held her hand. I guess our son is starting to grow up.”

“So you’ll have to give him the talk?” she asked with a hint of irony.

“Actually, I started it a while ago with one of his books. But I still haven’t gotten to that part.”

Janette made an uncertain grimace. “You think one day…”

“We did it too,” I reassured her, placing a hand on her cheek. “We just have to respect him and raise him well. The same goes for Alice. It’s part of our nature.”

The conversation ended there, and then we went to bed.

A good sleep was just what I needed after a heart-racing evening.

Content: 4A few days after Halloween, Janette and I had further proof that diapers have miraculous powers over our children. I confess, I still don’t know if that’s a good thing or not.

We were discussing how to improve, or rather, renovate, the attic in our house. Up to here, everything seems normal, you’d say — just the usual adult squabbles, with some irritation and backhanded comments to avoid ending up sleeping under a bridge. (I had no choice, so: Janette is right about everything, and her advice will be taken with great care.)

After a quick trip to the garage to grab some tools and the drill, I made my way to the attic to start the work. As I climbed the stairs, I thought about where to begin. From the old kitchen? The bathroom? Or the corner filled with boxes? The ticking of screws and the loud bangs of the drill case formed the annoying symphony that would accompany me for the rest of the day.

I had too many options. Figuring out which of the three was the easiest was complicated — after all, the workload was similar, but not to be underestimated.

At some point, I looked up. Tyler was standing there, motionless, watching me from the top of the stairs, hands clasped between his legs, cheeks flushed red. I stopped halfway and stared at him, he seemed upset.

“Hey, Ty,” I said, surprised. “Where did you pop up from?”

He trembled slightly. “From Alice’s room. Where’s mom?”

“She’s downstairs in the kitchen,” I answered, then shook my head. “Did you wet your diaper?”

He nodded, then lowered his pants a little. The symbol in the center of the pull-up was completely gone. “We were playing and I didn’t realize I needed to go… Sorry, dad.”

I raised an eyebrow, perplexed. Did I hear correctly? Alice and Tyler were playing together? For real, or was that a quick excuse he’d come up with? A shiver of happiness ran through my whole body.

I stretched my lips into a calm smile. “Ty, that’s exactly why your mom and I put it on you. Don’t apologize for peeing. Just so you know, your sister needs a change too, doesn’t she?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess so.”

I sighed. “Do me a favor, ask her. If she needs changing, tell mom, she’ll take care of it. As for you, I’ll handle it. I’ll put the tools down and come change you in a bit.”

Tyler tilted his head to one side, confused. “When I have the pull-up on, I’m supposed to change it myself. That’s what mom told me.”

“What?” His reply threw me off guard, so my paternal instinct took charge. “I know you want to be independent, feel like a big kid, but with these things... No, I don’t think you’re ready for that responsibility just yet.”

Tyler lowered his head. “When will I be ready?”

Damn it! I’d boxed myself into a corner with no way out. What was I supposed to tell him? The truth? That I still want to treat him like a two- or three-year-old? Damn it, he’s twelve! He’s a pre-adolescent, and I still see him as a newborn!

Before I could reply, Ty clenched his fists, looked away, and said resentfully, “Right. I just had an accident, maybe I’ll never be ready!”

A smirk of frustration escaped me. I sighed and calmly reassured him, “Ty, do as I said. Wait for me in your room, then we’ll talk about all of this. Okay?”

He obeyed, resigned. He disappeared behind the wall, leaving me alone with my thoughts, reflecting on what I had just witnessed. My heart and soul were shaken, and calming them seemed like an impossible task. I took three deep breaths, and the internal chaos eased a little.

I had another father-son talk ahead of me.

---

Tyler was sitting at his desk when I arrived. He avoided my gaze, as if giving me the silent treatment, both hands hidden under his crossed legs.

He wasn’t remorseful, as most would think, but simply lost in thought. I’d seen him in this state many times before, so I knew I needed to let him make the first move.

Without saying a word, I grabbed the sides of the chair and moved it toward the bed. Ty’s face changed expression as soon as I moved it. Immediately, I sat down on the bed, my eyes fixed on his averted, vacant ones.

Only then did I realize I hadn’t grabbed the necessary things to change him. I didn’t have a fresh diaper or pull-up, wipes, or rash cream. Damn it!

Tyler looked around, raised his gaze to me, and crossed his arms. He was showing some vulnerability, in a way. His hands were moving up and down at a precise interval: one second up, one second down. Fast, so that meant he was nervous.

“Are you going to put on another diaper?” he asked, his voice unsure.

“Yeah,” I replied quickly, “I forgot to grab your change before coming here.”

“My diapers are in the closet,” Tyler pointed to the large brown wardrobe across the room. “There are only the tear-away ones, the pull-ups are in the bathroom.”

“Which one do you prefer?” I asked curiously. “Another pull-up?”

Tyler nodded. “Yeah, but…”

“But?”

“I want… I want to change it myself.”

“You know that mom and I don’t agree with that.”

“Dad, I… I’m not a little kid anymore!”

I panicked. I swallowed the saliva filling my mouth. I knew this moment would come when he’d ask for more responsibility, more independence.

I wasn’t ready to allow it. Neither was Janette!

“Nobody said that,” I placed my hand under his chin. “You’re a good kid, Ty. I have no doubt about that. I want you to grow at your own pace, not too quickly.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve been wearing diapers for a short time,” I responded cautiously, “your mom and I worry that you might make a mistake that could lead to dangerous infections. We’re talking about the most delicate part of your body, that’s why mom and I want to be the ones to change your diaper.”

“I know how to clean myself well!” Tyler retorted, slightly offended. “I swim, I shower without any problem!”

“And what do you wear under your clothes?”

“Underwear.”

“At home?”

“Mom puts the diaper on me.” Tyler sighed. “I still don’t understand.”

“We want you to enjoy these moments without worrying about stopping to change,” I explained. “Slowly, mom and I will teach you how to take care of yourself with diapers, if you decide to keep wearing them.”

Tyler made a disgusted but sincere grimace. “Really? I can decide to keep wearing diapers even when I’m grown up?”

“Oh yes, my son,” I smiled. “Some people do it, but that’s another story. For now, let’s focus on changing you. You don’t want to pee again in that pull-up, do you?”

Tyler shuddered at the thought and shook his head. “No, please. It’s already uncomfortable as it is, I don’t want to wet it again!”

---

“Do you really like these pull-ups?” I asked Tyler as I tore off the dark blue bands from the sides. “Mom won’t stop complaining that they don’t absorb enough.”

He sighed incredulously, couldn’t blame him. “They’re the only ones with dinosaur designs! The others have designs of boys with skateboards.”

I rolled up the diaper, attached the last tape, and ended up with a wet, stinky, blue-green-and-white plastic ball in my hands. Yeah, Janette was right: these pull-ups weren’t suitable for Tyler.

I threw it in the dirty diaper basket, then grabbed him under the armpits and placed him on the changing table. “What’s wrong with them? I thought you liked skateboarding.”

Tyler collapsed like dead weight on the mattress, allowing me to clean him. “I do. It’s just… those designs suck. Only ollies and nothing special.”

I rubbed his bottom, then his penis. I unscrewed the jar of rash cream and spread some on his groin.

Tyler never stopped talking, even as I went near where the pee comes out. He told me how he would like to go to the skatepark with a diaper under his clothes, doing all the tricks he wanted without worrying about needing to go to the bathroom and accidentally wetting his clothes.

“Like on Halloween,” he said, “me, Dana, and… my diaper.”

“I remember that very well,” I laid him down and grabbed a new pull-up. “Mom gave me a headache almost as big as a house for how much you did!”

At some point, he placed his palms on my shoulders and lifted his left foot off the ground. Our eyes locked for a moment before he stepped back.

“Did I do something wrong?” he asked, worried.

“No,” I replied calmly, “I want you to put it on yourself.”

On his face, a huge and bright smile appeared. He lit up with happiness, to the point of hopping a few times.

He took the pull-up from my hands and slipped it between his legs as if it were just regular underwear. He pulled it up until his private parts disappeared. “Thanks, Dad.”

“Wait before thanking me,” I warned him.

I looked at the pull-up for a moment and noticed it wasn’t put on as it should be. So, I reached out, adjusting the absorbent part and fixing the edges to prevent the pee from leaking.

“Make sure to check right here in the middle,” I pointed with my finger to where I had just worked. “These are the bands that stop the pee from going outside the diaper. If you feel something’s not right, fix it right away. Got it?”

Tyler nodded, then hugged me tightly. “Got it all, thanks, Dad.”

“Anytime, kiddo. Now go back and have fun with your sister.”

Content: 5I was in the living room reading the newspaper when Alice came to me. From her pouty and nervous expression, I sensed that something was wrong. I stayed silent, pretending to be deeply immersed in my reading, too absorbed in my thoughts to notice her arrival.

Alice sat next to me. Her bottom bounced twice before sinking into the couch cushion, and the crisp, noisy sound of her diaper momentarily pierced my ears.

Should I check it for her as soon as I figure out what's bothering her? I wondered, still playing along with that act. Maybe I should ask Janette.

Right. Janette was out with Tyler to get a gift for Dana, whose birthday was in a few days. While she was at the supermarket, she would also stock up on diapers for both her and him.

I turned the page. The delicate paper emitted a soft, almost imperceptible rustling. The headline in bold print quoted a section of a speech made by a relatively unknown politician a few days earlier, someone of little public interest and an inefficiency beyond measure.

A bald man, short, always dressed in sweat-soaked clothes. The reason? His large body mass, his chubby and unhealthy physique. Certainly, the most unsuitable person to represent anyone.

I glanced to my left. Alice was squinting at the front page, curious about the article title. Her round face leaned in as if she were about to kiss the fragile paper.

“Did you find something interesting?” I asked casually.

“There’s a little girl wearing a diaper like me!” she exclaimed excitedly. “She’s not alone, there’s also a lady.”

I shot to the front page in zero time. Alice was right: at the bottom right, there was a photo of a woman and a smiling girl, with a changing table behind them. The headline read: The Story of Nancy: The Diaper Is Part of Me.

“Shall we read it together?” I proposed, my voice rising with a curiosity I never expected to feel. “Who knows, maybe it’ll give us some useful advice on how to better handle this phase of your growth.”

Alice nodded, jumped off the couch, and tugged at my jeans. “Let’s go read it in the kitchen!”

So we moved there, to the page of the story we wanted to read. Alice could barely contain her excitement, her teeth clenched and her fingers tapping the table in a regular rhythm.

The article was split into three columns, two on one side and the last one on the far end. Two photos separated the columns: one of Nancy with her mother, the other of Nancy during a diaper change. Of course, the little girl was covered by her mother. It would have been in bad taste, not to mention disrespectful, to see just her lying on the changing table with everything exposed.

“Ready?”

“Yes!” Alice, sitting on my lap, began reading aloud.

Nancy Daniels is just an ordinary girl. She has friends, she’s a skilled swimmer, and she’s a model child. One day, she decides to steal money from her mother’s wallet and goes to the supermarket to buy something unusual for an eight-year-old girl: a pack of diapers.

My mind wandered in a tangle of thoughts I never expected to fall into. Despite her mother, Mrs. Daniels, raising her properly, Nancy had done this. I wondered: would my children ever think of doing such a thing? And if they did, would they go through with it?

Alice, absolutely not: she was only six years old, barely knew how to count to thirty, and hadn’t yet learned how to use the toilet like other children her age. I doubted she was clever enough to decide on her own to go out and buy diapers.

Tyler, on the other hand, would have. Twice her age, a decent allowance, and a large enough backpack to hide the pack without raising suspicion. If he paid the same attention he does during his skateboarding sessions, he would fool anyone.

Where had Mrs. Daniels gone wrong?

“Dad?” Alice stopped and gave me a concerned look. “You seem sad.”

“No, no. I’m just distracted. Keep going, please.”

“Can you continue? I’m tired.”

Alice’s little finger was halfway through the first part of the left column.

“Of course,” I answered happily, “you’ve read more than enough and you’ve improved so much since the beginning of the year, you know?”

“Really?” She smiled proudly.

“Oh, yes!” I replied. “I told you reading before bed would help.”

She continued reading: “After receiving an unexpected and unsettling phone call at school, Mrs. Daniels found herself facing a situation that would have destabilized many parents. However, instead of being overwhelmed by emotion, she chose to approach the moment with calm and clarity, prioritizing her daughter’s well-being above all. With great sensitivity, she worked to put her child at ease, strengthening their bond of trust and preventing any misunderstandings that might arise in such a delicate context.”

“What does that mean?” Alice raised an eyebrow.

“It means her mom talked to her and didn’t go into a frenzy like most parents would.”

“Like you and mom did with Tyler?” she asked, her eyes wide.

“What do you mean, honey?”

“You and mom let Tyler go back to wearing diapers, just like me.”

I chuckled slightly, amused by her answer. “Alice, you two are different cases. Your brother knows how to use the potty, while you… well… no.”

“I know how to use the potty!” she shot back, offended. Her cheeks turned bright red.

“We both know that’s a lie,” I said gently. “But don’t worry, you’ll learn slowly. Until then, let your mom and I take care of your bottom.”

“Do you think Nancy is happy with her diaper like Ty?”

“There’s only one way to find out,” I replied, picking up the newspaper again.

---

As I changed Alice in the bathroom, my thoughts remained focused on two things: Nancy Daniels’ story and the mysterious, fascinating nature of curiosity. I felt trapped in a tangled maze, with only interconnected paths and no clues on how to find the way out. Damn!

Mrs. Daniels, Nancy’s mother, had decided to observe and better understand her daughter’s curiosity. She gave her rules to follow, spent quality time with her, and punished her when she did something wrong. Exactly the job of every parent on Earth. What was the point of their story?

She listened to her, comforted her when she cried, and asked if this was what she really wanted. The result? Nancy’s deep happiness and more costs to bear. That last part had sent me into a spiral. Yet, money wasn’t an issue for them, so why had the journalist dedicated an entire article to it? Had they desperately needed money, and was that article their only hope?

“Dad?”

“Yes, Alice?”

“Do you think Nancy is really happy now?” Alice lifted her head to meet my eyes. “Will she be sad when she decides to say goodbye to diapers forever?”

She finished giving a quick rub to her private parts and bottom, pulled down her legs, and tossed the wet wipe into the bin. She was referring to the uncomfortable questions from the journalist, especially the one about possibly having to leave diapers behind forever.

“She’ll probably be sad. After all, she’s saying goodbye to something that made her happy. As for the first question: yes, for now, she really does seem happy.”

Alice sighed. “Will I have to say goodbye to diapers too?”

My heart skipped a beat, then started racing. The clean diaper slipped out of my hands and fell under the changing table. I ducked my head to retrieve it. “What, Alice?”

“Will I stop wearing them too?” Her eyes grew teary, and her voice began to tremble.

I sat her down and gave her a little cuddle. “No, no, no. Alice, that’s not something you need to think about right now. Diapers help you not wet your clothes.”

“But Nancy said…”

“Nancy didn’t really say those words,” I lied bluntly, even though I truly believed that lie. “The journalist was paid to write that. It’s possible that her mother lets her wear diapers even when she’s older. It’s her decision, not anyone else’s.”

“I don’t want to throw them away when I get big!”

“You won’t,” I reassured her. “Neither I nor your mom will take them away if you don’t want us to.”

“Do you promise?” Tears streamed down her face.

“I promise,” I said, hugging her.

I will keep that promise, even if I have to clean her messy bottom for the rest of my days. I’d do anything to see her happy and smiling.
