Content: A flower grew in the field in the shade of a tree. It would have been easy to miss but the light caught it's strange, reflective petals. It had a long, thin, green stem and at it's base were bluish-green leaves shaped like diamonds on a playing card. The flower was made of the strangest assortment of bright and dark colors belonging to the secondary wheel, the pedals were like holograms the reflected the sun and appeared to move in the breeze so that one could be forgiven for mistaking it for a child's pinwheel.

I plopped down in the grass cross legged, resting my cheek on one propped arm as I searched my memory. No flower like this had ever been mentioned in the books, or pictures, or on the television programs or websites that I had frequented. There seemed to be no flower like this anywhere in nature.

I snapped it from its stem and ran home. There I found a jar and filled it with water and placed the flower by the kitchen window to bathe in the sun. And all day and all night, I thought of the flower and how it would fill my home with its friendly light.

The next day I came home from school and opened the door to find the paint on the walls peeling rapidly. The furniture all sickly and rotten, the television, radio, and other things were broken or shattered. Windows and glass surfaces covered in desperate scratches. The house smelled of death.

A thick sludge filled the jar by the window. The once green stem of the flower dangled weak and thin over the rim. A pile of gray dust covered the empty sink and parts of the counter. The flower and its petals were gone. I opened every window and turned on all the fans but the smell was so strong I had to sleep outside for many days.

When the house fell, I moved far away. My new job and new school were not so nice. I lived in a smaller home in a loud and scary place and rarely went real far. Until one day I had time off and took the bus back to the field.

The tree was gone. So was the grass. The street I lived on turned to dirt and all the homes and people disappeared. And to this day, as I lay here dying, the flower still shines in my mind.
