Content: Chapter One:

At first, she was sure that it would go unnoticed. The clock ticked, which was normally a noise she did not ever hear anymore. Right now though, it was screaming. Then her mom's head turned just a little more, and then her eyes gleamed with understanding. She stayed standing there for a moment longer, not moving. Then, slowly, too slowly, she turned her eyes to her daughter.

“Mom”, she stammered, “It’s not what you think!” Abigail finally managed.

Her eyes were moist but by shear will alone, she held the tears back. She was cracking. Her secret was out unless she played the next few moments’ just right. For years afterwards she would think back to this moment, and know how critical a few moments could be.

There are a few things you should know before we go any further. First, Abigail was not normally so secretive. This was probably the main factor in why she got caught. Second, she hated having this particular secret more than anything. Third, she loved her mother more than anything.

Her mom looked up for a moment, took a deep breath and then did the most surprising thing of all. She walked over to Abigail and wrapped her in her arms. It was one of those deep hugs that could cure anything. Her mom smelled of lavender and lotion. It was a great hug. But still Abigail’s mind raced.

Now, to tell you how we got here. Let’s go back two days. That should be sufficient, I believe. After all, when she told me this story, this is how she told me. Since it was her story, she must have had a reason. Sometimes, you don’t need all that many words to express a feeling.

So, two days ago. It all began like any other day. Well almost. Abigail had hid her deepest secret from her mom. There was no one else really. Her dad had left when she was little, and other than the shitty random Christmas or birthday card, he was gone. Her best friend of 12 years had moved at the beginning of the summer and while she had some other friends she still hung out with, it wasn’t the same. At least she had gotten to graduated high school with Amy, her BFF. But that was a month ago. She had signed up for community college but was going to take a semester off first. So she had a few months of nothing to do. Well, according to her mom she was supposed to be finding a job. Instead she was enjoying the time alone. Her mom worked a lot, she was indispensable at her job as a nurse. Or so they said. Ah, they.. always, saying things.

That was when she started spending a lot of time online. One day, out of boredom, she ended up finding out she was not alone in her secret. There were others like her. So, for the next few weeks she was glued to the screen. She saved her allowance, bought one of those disposable credit cards and ordered some things from online. The anticipation was killing her. Her first package was supposed to arrive today.

She still had mixed feelings about all of this. She knew deep down that it was way outside of normal and if she persisted it would cause her to always be on the outside of normal. But she still had done it, not allowing herself to think too much about it. After she ordered, she turned off the computer in her room, and spent the next two days hanging out with Sarah and Jasa. It was good to get her head back to reality and even her mom noticed she was perking up again.

That morning, her mom knocked on her door, which was unusual and said goodbye. And with that she was gone. She rolled back over and slept until she heard the doorbell ring. She slipped on her robe and slippers, and creeped down the stairs. The truck was just pulling away when she opened the door.

There on the doorstep was a plain looking brown box.

One that was about to change her life.
