Content: Sam’s SolutionSam was just your normal 8-year-old boy who lived with his Mom Ellen, his Dad Alan, his 10 year old sister Sarah and his 2 year old brother Simon with whom he shared a room.

Sam’s life was completely normal except for one thing. He woke up every morning with damp underwear and damp PJ shorts and always desperate for the toilet first thing, to the point he was having to hold himself to keep from dribbling. Problem number 1 was that Sarah always used to wake up before him and lock herself in the bathroom every morning for god knows how long meaning that Sam was unable to tend to his needs.

Sam would just lie in bed waiting for Sarah to get out of the bathroom and inevitably this led to Sam wetting his bed on a couple of occasions.

Ellen felt powerless to help in this situation. She had asked Sarah to be quicker in a morning and not block the bathroom but after the second wet bed from Sam in a week, Ellen decided to put the plastic mattress protector back on Sams Bed.

Sam wasn’t too bothered about the plastic sheet as he knew his bed was getting wet. But it only seemed to be his problem, he was waking up damp and cold anyway, not a problem that his brother Simon had as he was still in nappies.

Ellen was organised and kept a handful of Simon’s size 4 Pampers in a basket in the boys bedroom, a handful in a basket in the bathroom and another handful in another basket downstairs in the lounge. The main pack being kept in the airing cupboard and she would take a few out each day to keep the baskets topped up.

Sam had woken up on Friday morning again damp and cold and able to hear that Sarah was already in the bathroom. Feeling the plastic sheet under his bed sheets, he knew his mom was expecting more wet beds as he lost his struggle with his aching bladder. Sam just sat there, feeling dejected cold and wet, he knew he had to do something.

As usual, Ellen spent the day cleaning, tidying and looking after Simon. She saw that Sam had wet the bed again for the 5th time this week but also knew there was little she could do so just changed his sheets so his bed was clean and dry.

As Sam got into bed on that Friday night, he was already fearful of what he knew he would wake up to when an idea sprang into his head.

The previous weekend, his Uncle John and Aunty Sally had been to visit with his cousins Evie 6 and Bella who was 3. As the family was getting ready to leave after tea, Aunty Sally had changed Bella’s nappy on the floor in the living room but had then got Evie to lie down and put a nappy on her too.

“Just in case” Aunty Sally had said.

Thinking about this Sam thought well just in case I could use one of Simon’s nappies. Getting out of bed and creeping over to the basket, Sam grabbed a nappy, unfolded it then put it on his bed. Taking his shorts and pants down, he sat on the nappy and tried to tape it shut but it just didn’t quite reach. Undeterred, Sam pulled his pants up holding the nappy in place anyway.

The following morning, Sam woke up feeling warm and snuggly in his dry bed. Feeling pleased with himself that he had managed to stay dry until he noticed the padding between his legs. Feeling his aching bladder, he became aware that he was dribbling but still felt completely dry as he let his bladder go and flooded his nappy. Hearing Sarah finish in the bathroom, Sam got out of his still dry bed and went into the bathroom. He took the wet nappy out of his pants and balled it up and put it in the bathroom bin. Found the baby wipes and cleaned himself before going downstairs for his breakfast.

This became Sam’s new normal. Waking up in a warm dry bed was so much better and not having to struggle with holding every morning was just the icing on the cake. On occasions Sam even went down for breakfast still wearing his nappy that was completely hidden by his PJ’s.

Ellen had obviously noticed immediately that Sam’s bed had become dry every morning but left the mattress protector anyway just to be sure. Ellen also noticed that she seemed to be using more nappies so started paying more attention. She deliberately emptied the bathroom bin one evening after the kids were in bed and sure enough the following morning as she had just changed Simon, she found that there was already a used nappy in the bin. Was it Sarah or was it Sam, she had some work to do to find out without anybody else knowing but she already knew it was probably Sam with his new nightly success in dry beds.

The following morning was the weekend and paying extra attention to her tribe, Ellen spotted an unmistakable nappy sag in Sam’s PJ’s as he ran upstairs to get dressed after his breakfast.

Feeling extra confident that morning, Sam pulled the wet nappy out of his underwear and balled it up into the bathroom bin, he had his normal wipe down but also took another nappy and put it in his underwear before getting dressed.

Taking his spot, lying on the carpet in front of the fireplace, Sam started watching his Saturday morning kids’ programmes. A few minutes later and Ellen brought the clean and changed Simon down and he lay on the floor next to his big brother to watch the telly. Looking at her boys lying side by side on their fronts, it was quite obvious to Ellen that they were both wearing nappies.

The week went as weeks do and Ellen was very aware now that Sam was wearing a nappy to bed every night with the extra nappies being used out of the baskets and the extra nappies in the bathroom bin, but at least Sam’s bed was staying dry and she was not having to wash bedding every day.

The following Saturday Ellen wanted to try something. As Sam went upstairs to get dressed, she was changing Simon while waiting for Sam to appear, Ellen then made a big game out of pretending to forget who the baby was and trying to put a nappy on Sam with both the boys laughing at silly mommy. Ellen was actually being very calculated in seeing how close the small nappies were to fitting Sam, close but a couple of sizes to small she reckoned. Ellen left Sam to finish getting dressed as she took Simon downstairs. Sure enough when Sam came down, Ellen could see that he had got a nappy on again.

A little while later after tidying the kitchen and making the beds, Ellen announced that they were all going out to do the weekly shop and they all piled into the car and drove to the Asda superstore. Arriving at the store, Ellen parked near the front in the parent & child spaces before getting out and getting a trolley. Ellen put Simon in the seat and then they went in.

As usual, as they entered, Sam said something about needing a wee. Deciding to experiment a little, Ellen told him he had to wait. This was a normal thing for Sam leaving everybody having to walk one end of the building to the other and then back again just because he thought he might need a wee. Ellen could see he still had a nappy on so it wasn’t like he was going to be leaving puddles if he couldn’t wait.

And they were off, Sarah and Sam holding on to the trolley as instructed as they whizzed round the store getting the groceries and supplies she needed. In the baby aisle, Ellen grabbed a large pack of Pampers size 4 for Simon but then also noticed the new Pampers size 6. Thinking about it, she knew these would be perfect for Sam and grabbed a bumper pack of those too. The kids paying no attention whatsoever to the 2 different coloured packs of nappies in the trolley.

Walking though the clothing section, Ellen noticed the kids PJ’s and the new onesies, all in one PJ’s with feet like baby-gro’s but for bigger kids. Sarah already had some and she knew Sam wanted some as well and got him a blue pair and Sarah some similar white ones.

Finishing the shopping they went though the tills with a lady scanning the shopping, seeing the 2 different size nappies on the conveyor, the checkout lady looked at the kids then just gave a mom a knowing smile as she scanned the packs. Ellen just smiled back, got the shopping packed and paid for and then they were off home.

Just as they are about to leave Sam again said he needed a wee. Ellen smiled at him and said

“You’ll be ok, we’ll be home in a bit” and they then left. Ellen knew Sam still had a nappy on so no drama. Sam knew he had a nappy on so didn’t argue.

Getting home, Ellen put the shopping away then taking the 2 packs of nappies upstairs to the airing cupboard, she took 6 out of each pack. She went into the boys bedroom and put 2 of each in the basket, in the bathroom and 2 of each in the basket then went downstairs and put 2 of each in the basket downstairs too.

Getting home, Sam felt as though he must have leaked loads having been refused the toilet twice but he was still quite comfy. Going upstairs to the bathroom to inspect the damage, he was quite surprised to find his nappy was quite bloated and no doubt on the point of leaking. Choosing to dispose of it in the bin and wiping himself down, Sam pulled his underwear and shorts up before going out to play.

As Sam left, Ellen changed Simon and as she went to put the used nappy in the bin noticed its contents that she had emptied only that morning meaning that the nappy in the bin was what Sam had taken off. Pulling it out, Ellen was quite impressed how thoroughly used it seemed.

Around teatime, they were all in the living room watching telly when mom shouted through

“Sarah, could you do me a quick favour and change Simon’s nappy please”. Leaning over to the basket, Sarah noticed the 2 different sizes

“why have you got 2 different size nappies and which one should I use”? Sarah called back

“Just in case and use the smaller ones”

“Just in case of what”?

“Just in case I need bigger nappies, OK”

“OK” Sarah sighed and got to work changing Simon into one of the smaller nappies.

They had tea and spent the evening in front of the telly with Sam keen to get ready for bed. Just after 8, Ellen sent the children to go and get their PJ’s on while she undressed Simon downstairs and Sam could hardly wait. Going into his bedroom, he took all of his clothes off and the explored the basket finding one of the new bigger nappies. Unfolding it on his bed, he lay down on it and tried pulling the sides round to the front and found he was able to tape it on both sides. The new nappies were plastic backed, quite bulky and quite crinkly but Sam thought about it and never noticed Simon’s nappy crinkling so nobody would notice his. He pulled his Onesie on not even bothering with underwear as he didn’t need it to hold the nappy in place.

Sam returned to the living room and lay down in his place on the rug to watch some telly for an hour before bed. Ellen heard Sam’s nappy crinkling then noticing the extra bulk of his new nappies under his Onesie, absentmindedly asked

“Is that more comfy then” Sam still overwhelmed with the feelings of these well fitting nappies just said

“Yes thanks” but then thought to add “I’m always more comfy in my PJ’s”.

Trapsing upstairs for bed later, Sarah and Sam went in and brushed their teeth before Sam left closing the door for Sarah to use the toilet. Ellen suddenly noticing the absence of the nightly argument as to who uses the toilet first as Sam did not even bother trying and just went straight to bed. Somebody is going to have a wet nappy in the morning Ellen summised.

The following morning and Sam awoke even more refreshed and relaxed than normal. Making no effort to get out of bed, he just lay there and released his morning wee. His new bigger nappies easily absorbing and not even feeling wet. In fact, his new Baby-Dry nappies really did feel dry even with his baby habit.

Going downstairs for breakfast still dressed as he was, feeling very confident that his new Onesie easily hid his secret underwear. Just as they were finishing breakfast when as normal each morning, Simon filled his nappy. Sarah was first to bolt for the bathroom leaving Sam standing there. Sam also needed to do his morning business but with Sarah in the bathroom he knew he had a wait on his hands. Standing there whilst Ellen started changing Simon, Sam relaxed and filled his nappy too. It’s what nappies are for apparently. Sam turned to head upstairs but was called back by Ellen.

“Could you just clear the table for me please as I’m changing Simon”. Feeling conflicted but not knowing what else to do, Sam turned back to the table and started collecting the breakfast things and took them into the kitchen.

Seeing Sam waddle back and forth into the kitchen and the obvious lump in the back of his nappy, Ellen knew immediately what she had to do.

Finishing Simon and letting him up to escape, she called Sam over. Aware of what was in his nappy, Sam just wanted to go up to his room and wait his turn in the bathroom but Ellen had other ideas.

“Just come here a sec, I want to just check something”. Even though she was sitting on the floor, Ellen was able to lean over and pick Sam up before laying him on the floor in front of her in the same spot recently deserted by Simon. Without saying a word, Ellen unfastened Sam’s Onesie and pulled it down exposing his nappy. With her practiced skill, Ellen set about changing Sam’s dirty nappy and even just put a clean one back on him. Pulling him up in just and just wearing a T-shirt and his nappy, Ellen handed Sam his onesie and told him

“go and get dressed then”

No comments and no telling’s off and even better with Sarah still in the bathroom, she would have no idea. Sam trapsed up to his room to change his T-Shirts and put his shorts on. Still no underwear required he decided and then out to play in the garden with Simon. It was a nice day and the boys played between the sand pit and there Tonka toys to the swing set and climbing structure then back to their trucks.

Come lunchtime, she called the boys in. With a quick feel of their bottoms, she led them through the kitchen and into the living room. Simon’s nappy was wet but Sam still felt dry

“Don’t you need to go?” Ellen asked Sam

“Yeh but I didn’t know if I was allowed to” Sam replied

“I would not put you in a nappy if I didn’t think you were going t use it so yes you are allowed to. Whenever I put a nappy on you then I expect you to use it like a nappy just the same as Simon does so that’s wee’s and poo’s. It’s a nappy. It’s what it is for. So if you need a wee then have a wee and I can change you.” Ellen then set about changing Simon as Sam stood there and flooded his nappy too.

“Nappy or pants” Ellen asked Sam

“Nappy please” came the reply and he was also changed in a flash.

As time went on, Sam was waking every morning and wetting his nappy if he hadn’t wet it in the night. He was no longer aware of dribbling in the night and no need for holding on in the morning. On school days, Sam would come down still in his nappy for breakfast then upstairs, nappy off, toilet and shower before getting dressed for school. Weekends were however different as Sam filled his nappy every morning after breakfast to be changed by Ellen downstairs with the normal enquiry

“Nappy or pants”.

Sarah thought she was being clever by beating Sam to the bathroom every morning but it was no longer a race for Sam, he didn’t need it straightaway.

As time progressed over the next year, Ellen started to potty train Simon and wean Sam off his nappies too. Sam was doing well and was better at holding and although his plastic sheet remained, his wet beds were gone and he wasn’t in a nappy every night. Ellen did keep the boys in nappies whenever they were out for more than a couple of hours, ‘Just in case’ she told herself.

They even went and spent the day with Uncle John and Aunty Sally, all of the children now in pants during the day but shortly before leaving, Ellen got the boys and put their nappies on them just before leaving for the long drive home.

Sarah asked

“Why are you putting a nappy on Sam”?

“Just in case” came the obvious reply

Ellen kept the baskets with the nappies around the house even though they were now not used, they were there just in case.

Just after Sam turned 11, their Dad Alan was killed in an accident at work. It was a shock to everyone, but Sam seemed to taker it harder and withdrew to the point where he stopped speaking. Ellen then became aware that the nappies were being used again.

Checking on Sam one night whilst he was asleep in his bed, Ellen carefully checked his underwear to find he was wearing one of the size 6 Pampers which barely fit him. Sure enough the following morning, Sam came down for his breakfast with his unmistakeable droopy bum of a wet nappy. Sarah seemed to notice as well as she was grinning wildly at the sight af Sam’s bum but Ellen just hushed her. Sure enough Ellen noticed the wet nappies balled up in the bathroom bin again. It obviously never occurred to Sam that Ellen emptied the bins, so she knew what was in them.

That day while the kids were at school, Ellen went out and got one of the bulk packs of the new Pampers size 8. She knew these would fit Sam better and keep him comfy while he needed them. Returning home, she did her old routine and went round making sure there were a handful of the new nappies in each of the baskets.

When the kids got home from school, Sam was still not saying a word and looked like he was a million miles away by his blank expression. Telling Sarah to watch Simon, Ellen led Sam upstairs to his room. With no resistance, Ellen was able to undress Sam completely and then lie him on his bed. Grabbing one of the new nappies, she carefully lifted Sam and fed it under his bottom and it fastened round him perfectly whilst saying

“Just in case or if you need to, it’s OK with me”

Guiding his feet into his onesie, she wrapped him up and led him downstairs. The inconvenience of trying to use the toilet whilst wearing a onesie was not lost on Ellen but that would not be a problem for Sam as she was keeping him in nappies for a while.

The new regime Sam found himself in, helped him to relax and slowly get over the loss of his Dad. Every day when Sam got home from school, Ellen would get him to lie down on his back in front of the fireplace where she would then take his trousers and pants off and put his nappy on. She would then put his shorts on him all the while telling him

“what a good boy you are but I don’t think we can do this forever” and then cuddling him tightly.

I think you meant Sam here perhaps and in the following sentence too.

Thank you for taking the time to actually read my story an understand the characters.
I sometimes get a little confused myself as i may be writing multiple stories simultaneously or in quick succession. I fully expect that you may ccome to realise that my stories tend to wavour and cross each other. that is because I start my stories by writing what I know about and what I have experienced and then elaborate and embelish from there. Trying to identify reality and fiction in my stories would be a better game.
Thank you once again for reading my piece of life.
